8/16/2010 [Corporate]Groundbreaking Drum and Bugle Corps to March at 2010 DCI World Championships in Indianapolis as All Yamaha Ensemble
INDIANAPOLIS, IN. The legendary Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps will be seen again at the Drum Corps International (DCI) World Championships for the first time in 17 years, but this time they won't be going for the gold. Instead, Star Alumni Corps, which is comprised of musicians who marched with Star from 1985-1993, will be presenting a full field show featuring highlights of their most memorable performances, with instruments generously provided by Yamaha. Performing on Friday, August 13th at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Star Alumni Corps will be giving today's young DCI champions a taste of what the corps World Champions almost two decades ago.
Many alumni of Star have gone on to continue their involvement in the marching arts, with almost a third of alumni teaching in some way. A number of alumni have also continued the legacy in their own families, now seeing their children participating in one of the nation's most unique and interesting musical activities.
"This is what drum corps is all about - music education," said Troy Wollwage, Percussion Marketing Manager, Yamaha Corporation of America, Band and Orchestral Division. "The fact that these adults can return to they what they did over 17 years ago is a testament to the hard work, determination and support for music education that the drum corps activity has provided."
After winning the DCI World Championship in 1991 and placing third and second in 1992 and 1993 respectively, the corps decided to share their special art with a broader audience by partnering with the world renowned Canadian Brass to create a stage show called Brass Theatre. After several successful tours, Star again changed their show and created the Broadway show Blast!, which won the 2001 Tony award for "Best Special Theatrical Event."
Many of the instruments used by Star Alumni Corps are currently available for sale through your local Yamaha dealer.
