Voices are state-of-the-art digital recordings of actual instruments created with Yamaha's Advanced Wave Memory (AWM) system. These feature acoustic and electric pianos, organs, basses and guitars, brass, woodwinds, strings and tuned percussion, as well as a complete selection of modern electronic and sampled sounds. The voice section also includes a group of several multi-percussion sounds directly from the keyboard.

A special DSP (Digital Signal Processing) control adds studio-quality digital reverb to the voices, giving them a luxurious, natural ambience. Two settings - Room and Hall - are available and the depth of reverb effects can be adjusted for each voice.

Touch response gives you amazing expressive control as you play. The realistic voices respond to subtle nuances of your keyboard from the softest pianissimos to the most dramatic fortissimos. Split Voice and Dual Voice functions provide sophisticated and flexible ways of playing two different voices from the keyboard at the same time.

A Pitch Bend Wheel conveniently located to the left of the keyboard provides further real-time performance control. It lets you recreate, for example, the way a guitarist or horn player bends notes.

An advanced Auto Harmony function automatically fills out the melodies you play with professional-sounding harmonies. Six different settings - Duet, Trio, Block, Country, Octave and Strum - provide a wide variety of stylistic voices often used in jazz, popular and country music.

Voice Memory provides four user presets for storing your favorite voices for instant selection. This not only lets you store a voice (or voices, in the case of a Dual Voice setting) to a preset, you can also store all of its related settings: Auto Harmony, Reverb Depth, Volume, Octave and Pan. A total of 16 memory spaces are available for your voices.

Automatically provides rhythm patterns, matching bass lines and various orchestrated backing parts for your keyboard performances with push-button control over rhythm and accompaniment style variations.

Single Finger mode lets you automatically produce fully orchestrated accompaniment, while Fingered modes allows you to play all the notes of the chords yourself with the PSR-500 creating the appropriate accompaniment. The Custom Accompaniment function lets you used the 61 authentic percussion sounds and the instrument voices to create up to four of your own custom accompaniment styles.

This is a versatile performance recorder that gives you complete creative control of your music. It features 2 separate sections - one for chords and accompaniment, the other for melody - with five memory banks for each section. The Chord banks memorize the chord changes you play and the Auto Accompaniment styles you use. Melody tracks let you record more than lead lines and melodies - anything you play is memorized perfectly and synchronized automatically with the accompaniment.

Anything you play on the keyboard can be recorded to each of the four Multi Pad keys that allow you to immediately play back any musical phrase as you perform.

With MIDI the PSR500 can communicate with other electronic musical instruments. This capability enables you to control the sounds and rhythms of another MIDI instrument from the PSR-500, or control the PSR-500 from another MIDI instrument. The PSR500 can receive MIDI data (including velocity) over all 16 MIDI channels. It also features dynamic voice allocation for up to 28 notes at once and allows you to simultaneously play up to 16 PSR voices from a MIDI device.
