4-Track Configuration
It can record two tracks simultaneously and play back four. It has four independent digital and analog audio outputs. You can record two channels simultaneously, then mix and merge any number of "virtual" tracks under software control. It also offers extra flexibility in audio/video production applications, providing a stereo track for the score and two more for other material. It records approximately 10 minutes of stereo sound per 100 megabytes of hard disk capacity.
Multi-platform Versatility
Since the CBX-D5 connects to the host computer via a standard SCSI interface, it can be used with any computer for which appropriate software is available. Compatible software is currently available for Atari, Apple Macintosh, and IBM PC and compatible computers running Windows 3.1.
Professional Audio Specifications
Professional-quality 16-bit reproduction system that supports the standard 44.1 kHz CD sampling frequency, the 48 kHz frequency used by professional DAT recorders, and the 32 and 22.05 kHz frequencies used in broadcast and multimedia applications. For unmatched analog sound quality the CBXD5 employs a high performance 18-bit D/A converter and 8 over-sampling digital filter, while direct compatibility with AES/EBU, SPDIF, and Yamaha's original Y2 digital I/O formats means it can be used with the widest possible range of digital audio devices.
Full File Format Compatibility
Unlike dedicated hard-disk audio recorders which use a proprietary file format, the CBXD5 handles audio files in the same format as the host computer. Any standard file-handling utility, backup utilities included, can be used without modification. Sound files created on the CBXD5 can also be imported and edited by most waveform editing programs.
Minimum Load On the CPU
The CBXD5 is an "intelligent" processor with its own internal CPU system. It can communicate directly with the hard disk unit when reading and writing high-volume audio files, without placing any extra demand on host computer processor time.
Digital Mixer Plus Extensive On-board Effects
The CBXD5 has a complete Yamaha digital signal processing system built in! In addition to a 4x4 digital mixer, it features the same Yamaha digital signal processing LSI as the SPX1000 Professional Digital Multi-effect Processor. The CBXD5 has 82 preset effects, including reverb, delay, flanging, phasing, pitch change, chorus, ring modulatiion, and aural exciter. Each effect has up to 14 parameters that can be edited to customize the sound as required. Send and return levels can be set independently for each audio channel.
4-band Digital EQ For Each Channel
The superior quality of Yamaha digital equalization is evident in the success of products such as the DMC1000 Digital Mixer and the DEQ5 Digital Equalizer. The CBXD5 features the same outstanding EQ performance in the form of individual 4-band parametric equalizers for each audio channel.
Realtime Sampling Frequency and Format Conversion
The CBXD5 solves compatibility problems by allowing direct, realtime conversion between most sampling frequencies and digital formats. For example, pre-production DAT tapes recorded at 48 kHz can be easily converted to 44.1 kHz for CD mastering. You can even simultaneously play back two different audio files recorded at 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. Consumer-format (SPDIF) sources can be converted to professional AES/EBU format, and the CBXD5 can be used with Yamaha format devices such as the DMP7D or DMP11 Digital Mixing Processor for advanced but economical digital mixing with automation and editing facilities.
Simultaneous Digital Audio and MIDI Control
In the normal system configuration, audio data is transferred between the hard disks and the CBXD5 via the SCSI bus, while control commands are sent from the computer to the CBXD5's MIDI input. The CBXD5 also has a MIDI OUT/THRU terminal that allows MIDI data to be passed on to tone generators and other MIDI devices.
Simple-but-Functional Panel
Since the CBXD5 is computer controlled, there is no need for front panel controls. The panel does, however, offer a few important features. Independent 12-segment peak level meters for the two input and four output channels let you monitor signal levels at all times - no matter what's on the monitor screen.
