XM HD Surround Sound
XM and Neural Audio Corporation announce XM HD Surround, which provides content with six discrete channels of digital full fidelity audio powered by Neural Audio technology. Marking the first time that a radio company has broadcast in 5.1 Surround Sound twenty-four hours a day. Beginning in April 2006, XM will broadcast the Fine Tuning® (XM Channel 76) and the classical pops music channel XM Pops (XM Channel 113) in XM HD Surround. XM will also broadcast a variety of special shows and live music performances at the XM studios in XM HD Surround.
Neural Surround represents the latest advancement in surround technology and has been adopted by XM Satellite Radio for digital radio broadcast of surround recordings and live events in surround sound. Neural Surround employs psychoacoustic frequency domain processing which allows delivery of a more detailed sound stage with superior channel separation and localization of audio elements. System playback is scalable from 5.1 to 7.1 multi-channel surround playback.

CINEMA DSP Digital™
Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby® Digital and DTS Digital Surround™ decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP Digital™ is much more advanced; actually creating independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects located in separate sound fields, you will hear sound with directionality, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and presence.
Yamaha has developed a natural, realistic DSP algorithm for headphones. Parameters for headphones have been set for each sound field so that accurate representations of all the sound field programs can be enjoyed with a pair of headphones.
Compressed Music Enhancer
Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original recording as possible.
SCENE – A New Level of Operating Ease
With most AV components, watching or listening to what you want requires a number of steps. You have to turn on the AV receiver, turn on another component like a Blu-ray Disc™ player, select the source, select the surround mode and then press play. With the SCENE feature from Yamaha, all you need to do is press one button and both components turn on, the correct DSP setting is made, and play begins.
YPAO™ Automatic System Calibration
The Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimizer (YPAO) uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room.

Comments about Yamaha htr-6160_black__u:
Bought this used as my first HT set up and haven't looked back.
As someone who never considered themselves an audiophile, but liked a good sound, this receiver has suited my purposes beyond expectations.
For me, an untrained ear, the sound is fine. In fact, I think it's awesome. As a buddy of mine says, and he is a professional sound engineer, if it sounds good to you… "Great!". I bought a Yami htr because he had one, a previous model with dvi.
I went with the 7.1 thinking I'd be able to use it. Not much was available in 2010 when I bought it but the 5.1 sounds great with the digital inputs. I've got one sub hooked up to it and you can add a second.
I run a optical toslink from my computer to the unit to play Internet radio and such which is really nice as a wonky thing to be able to do.
I use a Western Digital Media Centre to play movies and Internet content I've downloaded. It outputs 5.1 digital into the HTR without a hitch and everything comes though nicely over the HDMI cables.
The only possible hitch I could point out, and it's only because it's an early model, is the 2 HDMI in and 1 out, but a little hdmi box would fix that issue if you need expansion.
And I've got to say, the manual is a little dense. Plan on reading the whole thing, probably a couple of times, at least the first half, to figure out everything. All the answers are there, for the most part, it's just a little obtuse in how the information is put together and presented, especially when you start tinkering around.
And there's lots to tinker with! You can futz with the EQ settings, custom this and that! If you're a wonk into that kind of stuff, this is the box for you!
So, if you find a good price on one for sale, it's got all the go-fasts and bells'n whistles you'd want for a quality receiver, and certainly for a first entry into the HT thing to get your feet wet. Plenty of power, tons of connections
When the day comes that you think you've outgrown the 6130, congratulations, your way outta my pay grade, pal!
PS Upgrading finally to a Sharp 60" and can't wait to hook the 6160 up to it!
