Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

SCENE – A NEW LEVEL OF OPERATING EASE
Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for DVD viewing, disc listening, TV viewing and radio listening. Pressing a SCENE button automatically launches a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod listening, XM listening, TV sports viewing and action game playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed, too.

YPAO™ Automatic System Calibration
Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!
ECO Mode
ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent*. It can be set easily from the top of the GUI/OSD menu.

I used this to replace a 10 yr. old Onkyo which had good sound but no HDMI inputs. It is paired with a JBL center channel, satellites and two vintage Altec-Lansing front speakers and an Infinity sub-woofer.
Hooking up the Yamaha was very easy, especially with the HDMI cables between the bluray and the HD cable box.
After it was set up, I used the remote mic to auto calibrate the speakers and then just tweaked the setting slightly to adjust for my taste.
The sound is clear and clean and the dialog in a movie that was getting lost before, is much better and easier to discern from the background audio.
Overall, I am very happy with the purchase for the money. But I only have it for 2 weeks, so I haven't used it too much yet and look forward to testing it with other movies. And I did have one instance where I had no sound and had to shut it off and restart it before it kicked in. Probably nothing and it only happened once.
I only gave it 4 stars because I have heard better, but it's 5 stars versus other receivers in the same price range.

I use this with my Panasonic 55 inch Plasma and my surround 5.1 and it really sounds great. The price was great! This entry level reciever surpassed others that I was looking at in the same price range. It's quite powerful and probably has more than what you need if you want an entry level device.

I wanted to replace a 20-year-old receiver and integrate a DirecTV box, modern BD/DVD player, and a PC into a 5.1 surround sound system. Since I don't listen to radio very often, AM/FM isn't all that big a deal to me, however, I was very pleasantly surprised that reception was greatly improved over my old receiver.
My "poor descriptions" con comment relates to the use of industry standard acronyms that are confusing and for which Yamaha provides little assistance. While I'm convinced this is no different than any other supplier, I sure would love to see a single place where I could learn about and compare all those things.

I am fussy, yet practical, Yamaha gave me the best flat sound to start with (for the buck). I can then tune the system to the room with the tools provided and using my own audio analysis tools.
This setup was fast and without error. It has enabled me to simplify my entire setup and enjoy music and the tele that night!
Most impressively my giant Wharfedales are well powered and absolutely silent when there is no signal happening.
Just my opinion but . . . I don't really like the remote - I cant put my finger on it (pardon the pun) but it feels awkward. Say 8/10 for the remote. 9.99/10 for the entire system!

This was a replacement for my previous receiver (which broke just after the 2 year warranty). I decided to go with a Yamaha because Yamaha has been a brand name for receivers since the early 70's. Compared to my previous receivers, this was really easy to set up. Also, when I played my first Bluray, I immediately noticed the sound improvement (greater depth of sound, and more sound from the satellite speakers).

This is a great mid-level receiver for audiophiles on a budget who are not satisfied with cheap "out of the box" Surround Sound systems. Easy, intuitive set up and configuration. One of the best thought-out remotes I've seen. Non-audiophiles may struggle with the settings though. I have yet to try full volume as I'm hesitant about replacing my windows. At half volume the whole house (and everything in it) vibrates!!! Sound quality is great. There are enough adjustable settings and filters to make most audiophiles happy. Definately worth the price.
