HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or AV Receiver and a video monitor, such as a High Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Audio Return Channel (ARC) is a distinctive 3D-ready function allows consumers to use a single HDMI connection to transfer digital audio from the TV back to the AV Receiver eliminating the need for a second cable between the TV and the home theater AV Receiver.
HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.
The actually measured sound field data contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of the sound images so that it creates the accurate and intensive stereoscopic sound fields in a listening room.
On-Screen GUI (Graphical User Interface)
This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. The on-screen display can show album art, provides a choice of various languages and is visible over 3D images.
SCENE for One-Touch Start
The Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for BD/DVD Viewing, CD Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. Pressing a SCENE button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, SiriusXM Listening [model dependent], TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed also.
YPAO Automatically Sets the Best Sound for Any Room
Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!
Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.

I have a friend who for years has told me, "When you buy your next receiver buy a fine Yamaha product." When I took a picture of the receiver I was considering in the store and shot him a picture of it on his phone, he immediately said, "Get it. You won't be sorry." He was so right.
The setup was fast, the GUI clean and efficient. My Infinity home theater speakers literally "woke up" in a big way, especially my BU-1 powered subwoofer.
I got the room tuned, invited my friend up and he was blown away by the warm, room trembling lows and superior separation. Among other things, he is a serious working musician. His input validated what I already knew. My price/performance Nirvana had been achieved.

I would like my RX-V471 to have an input to add my seperate equalizer to furthur mix my sound likes. I understand this receiver has a built in equalizer but would like the option to manually adjust the sound mix using my seperate equalizer. Bought this to replace my old RX-V990 . Wow things have changed in the AVR world haha. It is a pleasure to listen to but have one question if anyone here knows the answer it would be great. On the Sur.Decode button on the remote , the manual states you can toggle between modes . When I do that it only does straight ( also , straight is off using the stright button itself ) . So far I've only been using my Dish HD reciever on it .

Replaced a Panasonic Home Theater in a Box all on one system. It had good volume but too few options, limited inputs, small subwoofer. The RX-V471 has much more sophisicated sound. It allows for detailed adjustment of each speaker, including it's size, distance from the listener and individual volume adjustments. Comes with a mic and auto setup system to make those determinations.
This model doesn't do any upscaling for older technologies such as component or composite video. It simply does a passthrough to your TV inputs of the same technology, component or composite.

Picked this up for my home theater and am very happy with it for that purpose. The sound reproduction with a set of Energy Take 5.1 speakers is crystal clear with amazing fidelity. After a couple of weeks to let the speakers break in I used the YPAO and noticed a distinct improvement in channel separation and stereo imaging. I like that this feature is available even in Yamaha's lower priced units.
I wouldn't mind slightly larger remote control buttons, but its easier to use than I thought it would be when I first looked at it.
This unit has been replaced with a newer model that appears to be significantly the same and is probably a similar good choice in this price range.

My wife and I purchased this Yamaha RX-V471 A/V Receiver as a Christmas gift to ourselves last year (Nov. 2012). We paired it with a set of Yamaha 5.1 surround sound speakers. We bought it to replace an older Yamaha RX-V393 Receiver that we have, which is now in my workshop, along with my Teac Equalizer and my set of "B" speakers. So far, we are very pleased with this unit. Even though it has plenty of settings for those that wish to adjust everything, it was very simple to hookup. I do like the HDMI hookups, the USB port in the front, the 3D support, the ARC support, At 535 watts, this unit will get very loud, with no distortion. For the price, this unit was an excellent deal. I really like the YPAO sound optimization feature; it helped me to correct some wiring issues that I did not know I had. The Auto preset tuning is a great feature as well. The initial volume-setting feature is also great because my wife is hard of hearing and it lets me set it a little louder when it comes on so that she can hear it.
I do have a few issues with this unit, but do not feel that they take away from the quality or price point of this receiver. First, there is no way to connect and use my Teac Equalizer. Second, there are no connections for a set of "B" speakers. Third, there should also be a USB port on the rear panel. Fourth, there should be a default clock feature on the display panel.
Overall, we would highly recommend this unit, or any other Yamaha sound product for that matter.

Comments about Yamaha rx-v471_black__u:
works for what i wanted, a nice easy unity for my great room and main TV area. WII would not run using standard AV cables, must have HD connectors. Other than that, runs well, excellent FM reception, but my very nice older turntable will not connect through this.
