USB Digital Connection for iPod and iPhone
A USB port on the front panel provides convenient connection for your iPod/iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV Receiver, noise interference is minimized and sound quality is much better.
HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel
1080p HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel (4 In/ 1 Out) deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or AV Receiver and a video monitor, such as a High Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Audio Return Channel (ARC) is a distinctive 3D-ready function allows consumers to use a single HDMI connection to transfer digital audio from the TV back to the AV Receiver eliminating the need for a second cable between the TV and the home theater AV Receiver.
HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.
The actually measured sound field data contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of the sound images so that it creates the accurate and intensive stereoscopic sound fields in a listening room.
On-Screen GUI (Graphical User Interface)
This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. The on-screen display can show album art, provides a choice of various languages and is visible over 3D images.
SCENE for One-Touch Start
The Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for BD/DVD Viewing, CD Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. Pressing a SCENE button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, SiriusXM Listening [model dependent], TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed also.
YPAO Automatically Sets the Best Sound for Any Room
Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!
Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.

Eco-Friendly Design

The RX-V471 has a low standby power consumption of 0.1W (1.2W in HDMI Standby Through mode) and an Auto Power Down feature (selectable to 4, 8 or 12 hours) which help make this an environmentally friendly receiver
Optional Accessories for Added Convenience
Yamaha Docks make it easy to enjoy your favorite music from your iPod or iPhone, with or without cables. With the YDS-12, all you have to do is set the unit in the cradle.

Dolby® TrueHD

Dolby TrueHD is Dolby’s next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.
dtsHD

DTS-HD® featured products have the ability to decode all streams required for DTS-HD Master Audio™ but may have limitations in channel output and/or sampling frequency; or may utilize unique post processing.
HDMI®

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. With the ability to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray Disc™ player, DVD player or AV receiver and a video monitor, such as a high-definition television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Depending on the model of product, HDMI can support standard, enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It can support all currently-available compressed audio formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS) and most newer HDMI devices can support lossless digital audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

I have a friend who for years has told me, "When you buy your next receiver buy a fine Yamaha product." When I took a picture of the receiver I was considering in the store and shot him a picture of it on his phone, he immediately said, "Get it. You won't be sorry." He was so right.
The setup was fast, the GUI clean and efficient. My Infinity home theater speakers literally "woke up" in a big way, especially my BU-1 powered subwoofer.
I got the room tuned, invited my friend up and he was blown away by the warm, room trembling lows and superior separation. Among other things, he is a serious working musician. His input validated what I already knew. My price/performance Nirvana had been achieved.

Comments about Yamaha rx-v471_black__u:
I've had this receiver for a couple of week and it was a replacement for a fantastic sounding Sony STR-DE915 that the front and rear channels stopped working at 14 years of use. I bought it due to wanting to stick to a 5.1 system, the high reviews for this receiver and great reputation for Yamaha.
Using the included microphone to setup the sound was simple, but the results were disappointing. The inital sub setting was far too low and the corners were unbalanced. You are better off using the test tone and a good ear or db meter to set it up. I spent about 3 hours setting up and balancing the system.
My setup is 2 HDMI inputs (PS3 and DVR) and 1 optical input (from a 3D TV) wired with all high-speed Monster cables. Once setup, sound is very good...especially in Dolby Prologic II/IIx modes. Surround field with enhanced rear shift is right on the mark with great balance with the latest 3D Blu-Rays. Why 4 stars and not 5? The automatic setup not working well knocked it down a little and the volume knob on the front is cheap plastic. Yes, you can use the remote to control volume, but when you touch that front knob the feel immediately screams ugghhh...cheap.

This is a perfect receiver (RXV-471) for someone that has a 5.1 system in their media/living/family room.I have a 5.1 system with Definitive Technology speakers (ProCinema 1000) and sound great with this receiver. I had an older Yamaha receiver and after the upgrade; it sounds 300% - 400% better. This is definitely a great receiver at this price range (under $250 on [@]).I recommend it.

Comments about Yamaha rx-v471_black__u:
I think Yamaha makes the best entry level and mid level receivers on the market. This is based on my experience with a 2010 model V667 and this 2011 model V471 and comparisons to similar offerings from other manufacturers. Ease of use, sound quality, and features are its strengths. The V471 would do best in a small or medium sized room as it is not as powerful as the much more expensive receivers. The lack of multi-channel output for an external power amplifier is a weakness but at this price level no manufacturer offers this feature.

Comments about Yamaha rx-v471_black__u:
I like my new Yamaha RX-V471. I wished it had a B system for stereo in another room/or out by the pool. I use my iPod for my music (over 2500 songs) and purchased A Yamaha YDS-12 universal dock to use with the RX-V471. Problem is I cant watch TV with the sound on the TV turned off when using the Yamaha dock. If I hooked up the system differently I think it would work, but not using HDMI and standby pass through. I solved the dock problem with getting a dock that I hooked up to the unit using AV6. Now when i use the dock I can use the "options" feature on the unit and specify where I want the unit to get the audio signal from. So the AV receiver is still set to HDMI2/TV...but the audio comes from AV6/dock...and I still have my HD 1080 Picture on TV.
