HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel
1080p HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel (4 In/ 1 Out) deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray player, DVD player, or AV Receiver and a video monitor, such as a High Definition Television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Audio Return Channel (ARC) is a distinctive 3D-ready function allows consumers to use a single HDMI connection to transfer digital audio from the TV back to the AV Receiver eliminating the need for a second cable between the TV and the home theater AV Receiver.
HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.
The actually measured sound field data contain the information of the height of the sound images. CINEMA DSP 3D mode achieves the reproduction of the accurate height of the sound images so that it creates the accurate and intensive stereoscopic sound fields in a listening room.
On-Screen GUI (Graphical User Interface)
This clean and simple interface makes setup and other operations extremely easy. The on-screen display can show album art, provides a choice of various languages and is visible over 3D images.
SCENE for One-Touch Start
The Four SCENE buttons make operating the receiver easier than ever. They are initially set to default settings for BD/DVD Viewing, CD Disc Listening, TV Viewing and Radio Listening. Pressing a SCENE button will automatically launch a number of operations that initiate play of the source controlled by that button. Other SCENE settings are also available, such as iPod Listening, SiriusXM Listening [model dependent], TV Sports Viewing and Action Game Playing. Browsing and selecting the settings is quickly accomplished by changing Input via the front panel and watching the on-screen display. The settings can be selected for one-time use, or they can replace the original default settings. The SCENE names can be changed also.
YPAO Automatically Sets the Best Sound for Any Room
Yamaha’s YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!
Compressed Music Enhancer
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.
Eco-Friendly Design

I have a friend who for years has told me, "When you buy your next receiver buy a fine Yamaha product." When I took a picture of the receiver I was considering in the store and shot him a picture of it on his phone, he immediately said, "Get it. You won't be sorry." He was so right.
The setup was fast, the GUI clean and efficient. My Infinity home theater speakers literally "woke up" in a big way, especially my BU-1 powered subwoofer.
I got the room tuned, invited my friend up and he was blown away by the warm, room trembling lows and superior separation. Among other things, he is a serious working musician. His input validated what I already knew. My price/performance Nirvana had been achieved.

I understand this receiver has a built in equalizer but would like the option to manually adjust the sound mix using my seperate equalizer. This unit replaced my 12 year old Yamaha receiver. My complaints are minor: I had to add a pre-amp for my turntable, that only cost about $40. The other issue has to do with my Klipsch speakers - I have 2 large towers each with a built in sub. (plus center and rear spkrs)The old receiver had a setting to send LFE to the front speakers, the new one does not. I suppose I could get some long cables to connect to the sub woofer out, but I would need 2 long ones. Otherwise I love it...

I spend more time watching my RX-V471 than my other three receivers. The RX-V471 works beautifully, and the remote performs flawlessly. I plan to add my vintage Laser Disk player soon, and I believe the receiver will accommodate it. That is how flexible the unit is...it makes allowances for both older and cutting edge state-of-the-art equipment. Obviously, I prefer using the HDMI inputs, but standard inputs are also useful for older equipment. The price and quality of this receiver are outstanding. You can't go wrong!

I use this to control imput to my LG Smart TV. I have a HTPC as a primary source of material, followed closely by a Roku XDS and just added an AppleTV (Gen3). Everything goes through HDMI to the set and I use audio return channel to view stuff like Vudu from the SmartTV. The Yamaha automatically switches when I set the TV to one of the Smart apps. Nice touch. Everything works well; sound is very satisfying and the ease of setup and operation is a relief. I do tech stuff all day and at night when I come home to watch a show, I just want it all to work without hassle. This does the trick. BTW, this unit replaced a recent Sony model that did not work as well and eventually got a glitch that caused it to continually reboot the TV. (The HDMI signal was out of spec or something.) Now the Sony is out in the garage and this Yamaha is the star of the show. Thank you Yamaha!

Tried a Pioneer and a Sony. Took them both back for compatability and setup issues. This Yamaha fit like it was made for us. Using Bose speakers with a Cerwin Vega sub woofer. Sound is AWESOME even at low volume. (wife loves the volume part) Auto setup was easy and tweeking system is simple.

This receiver replaced a 12 year old top of the line Onkyo that was starting to have problems. It was very well priced, and sounds comparable to the Onkyo it replaces.
The automated setup was a breeze and the whole thing took less than an hour to get hooked up and running.
My only problem is what others have noticed, an occasional dropping out of the sound for maybe a half second every once in a while. Maybe once every two or three hours.

The only negative I can say is that when turning on the system it does not stay on the last output used. It initially is set on it but changes after about 3 seconds. There may be a way to get it to stay but I have not found it yet.
