Visually Intriguing Design
As a manufacturer of fine musical instruments, Yamaha AV products are created with sensitivity to great sound and elegant design. The YAS-101 has large speaker units designed with a focus on simplicity and elegance.
The Piano Black Finish
Glossy and beautiful, to Yamaha, piano black is a very special color. The elegance and sophistication of the YAS-101 emanate from its polished black surface and perfectly harmonizes with any interior.
Curved Surface Projects Surround Sound
The front is beautifully designed with a gentle curve. This stylish sound bar gives the impression of smoothly projecting surround sound to all parts of the room.

Features
Integrated System with Dual Front Speakers and Subwoofer
The YAS-101 sound bar combines two 2-1/2” cone speakers with a dual-driver (3” cones) subwoofer, driven by a digital amp with a total output of 120 W. Although compact, its excellent structural design provides a large volume enclosure for both the speakers and subwoofer. The result is powerful, high quality sound that makes TV and movies much more enjoyable.

Dual-driver Subwoofer Powerfully Reproduces Bass Sounds
The dual-driver subwoofer employs large magnets and large-diameter voice coils to realize dynamic and robust bass sound reproduction. This ensures that the overall sound has a rich sense of presence, making movie effect sounds more realistic.
Bass Reflex Port Contributes to Deeper, Richer Bass
The YAS-101 employs a bass reflex port that has a straight shape and adequate length to provide outstanding bass response together with the large volume cabinet. The duct outlet is shaped like a trumpet bell, which reduces wind noise for better sound clarity.

Saran Net Grille Enhances Sound Definition
The grille protecting the speaker unit is a saran net that allows unimpeded sound flow. All sounds, including vocals and music, are clear and pleasant to listen to.
AIR SURROUND XTREME Provides Powerful Surround Sound
Yamaha’s exclusive AIR SURROUND XTREME reproduces 7.1 channel surround sound with high quality, excellent imaging and rich presence, far superior to that of any other sound bar. You’ll experience an extremely realistic and impressive sound field, with clear dialogue in the front and dynamic sound action at the back and sides.

Compatible with Various Surround Sound Formats
The YAS-101 sound bar is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby® Digital and DTS Digital Surround™, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound.
Clear Voice Makes Dialogue and Narrations Easy to Hear
Clear Voice raises the level of dialogue and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.
UniVolume™ Maintains the Same Volume Level
This welcome feature, made possible by Yamaha-developed technology, maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. It can be switched on and off.

Audio Delay Control (Lip Sync)
This technology adjusts the timing of the picture and dialogue.
Jack for an Extra Subwoofer
The subwoofer out jack lets you connect an additional subwoofer to enjoy even more powerful bass sound.
Slim, Low-profile, One-body Design for Positioning in Front of a TV
With a height of only 4-1/4”, the YAS-101 can be easily positioned in front of a TV so the sound bar straddles the TV stand. With the stand removed, the height can be adjusted. Because both speakers and subwoofers are built in, it fits more easily into available space than separate components.

Can Also Be Hung on a Wall

If the TV is hanging on a wall, you can remove the stand and hang the YAS-101 on the wall as well.
Built-in IR Flasher for TV Remote Control Signal Transmission

Even if the YAS-101 blocks the TV’s remote control signal, the IR flasher on the back of the sound bar transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.
Learning Function Allows Operation with the TV Remote Control

The YAS-101 can “learn” the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to turn the YAS-101 on and off and to adjust its volume.
Simple to Operate Remote Control Supplied

The YAS-101 remote is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power on and off, adjust the volume and do other basic operations and even lets you switch the surround modes. Together with the learning function, you can use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation.
Stylish Design Achieves Both Visual Beauty and Ease of Use

Although low enough to be placed neatly in front of a TV, the body is beautifully finished with an elegantly curved front surface. It adds a stylish accent to your entertainment area.
Glossy Black Finish Matches Flat-screen TVs
The front panel and top have a rich, glossy piano black finish that harmonizes beautifully with the newest thin TVs for a stylishly compact home theater system.
Technology
Dolby® Digital

The most popular 5.1 channel home theater sound system. An improvement over Dolby® Pro Logic® in that it offers: 1) Full frequency response in all channels (3 Hz — 20 kHz), 2) discrete surround channels, and 3) a separate track for bass, only, called the Low-Frequency Effects channel.
DTS Digital Surround™

DTS Digital Surround™ was developed to replace the analog soundtracks of movies with a 6.1 channel digital sound track and is now rapidly gaining popularity in movie theaters around the world. DTS, Inc. has developed a home theater system so that you can enjoy the depth of sound and natural spatial representation of DTS Digital Surround™ in your home. This system produces practically distortion-free 6 channel sound (technically, front left and right, center, surround left and right and LFE 0.1 (subwoofer) channels for a total of 5.1 channels). This unit incorporates a DTS-ES decoder that enables 6.1 channel reproduction by adding the surround back channel to the existing 5.1 channel format.
AIR SURROUND XTREME

Achieves surround sound with clarity and sound imaging unlike any other two-speaker system. Hear clear dialogue from the front with distinctly separate surround sounds and smooth movement around the sound field. 7.1 channel technology - articulate sound source expressions from various directions: The AIR SURROUND XTREME has employs a virtual 7.1 channel technology that can independently recreate the surround channel and surround back channel in stereo. The result is clearly and amazingly identifiable sound sources from various directions. Position mode - sideways shift of the most effective listening point: This mode is capable of shifting the most effective listening spot on the row while keeping the sound field of a multi-channel program. The amazing ability to shift the best listening point by a mere balance adjustment provides an ideal surround effect, even when listening while not exactly in between two speakers. Wide mode - widening of the surround effective area: Wide mode is for two to three people listening laterally. Our original technology - "multi-point crosstalk canceling" process - creates a comfortable surround feeling in a much larger area, adding a further value to the AIR SURROUND XTREME for the enjoyment of more than two people.
UniVolume™

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
When I went to store, there were like 15 different sound bars and I tested all, this one stood above all especially with vocal and music; bass is not that impressive but enough for daily use. Best part is its simplicity to use.

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
Overall, very impressed with the system. It has great, quality sound, even at a loud volume level. I have a gaming system hooked up to it and also my tv, which is perfect for me. It was very easy to install and start using. If you are looking for something that is easy to use and quick to set up, this is it. I have always been happy with Yamaha products. The system has a couple nice features if you are using it for tv. It has a "Clear Voice" option which amplifies peoples voices during programs and makes it easier to hear what they are saying. It also has a "Uni Volume" option, which keeps the volume at the same level, even during commercials. The only thing I would recommend is to definitely purchase an external subwoofer. The internal subwoofer is pretty weak. You will have to purchase a subwoofer cable also. I am very happy with the system though. Great product!

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
The YAS-101 is a great soundbar. I hooked the sound to the back of my Panasonic TC-P42S1 Plasma TV using the supplied optical cable. Make sure to turn the sound off on the TV. The soundbar really gets the job done (IMHO)
I struggled way too long trying to figure out how to program my Direct-TV remote to the YAS-101 so I didn't have to use Yamaha's remote. It was a pain using 2 remotes just to mute and change the volume settings. Finally, after too much time searching, I found the procedure to link the YAS-101 to my Direct-TV satellite remote. It worked ok except not being able to mute the sound:
Go to Yamaha's website, go to Home>Support>FAQ's>Search by category>Audio and Visual>Soundbars/Digital Sound Projectors>YAS-101>Click Select. In the following list of FAQ's click on #10 "YAS-101 Programming your TV/Cable/Satellite remote to work with YAS-101" and follow the instructions, then see below on the follow up.
Other thoughts:
I sometimes use my TV or DVD-BD to listen to music over the Web or wirelessly through my networked DVD-BluRay via computer music files or Pandora, etc. This is the only real stereo device I use and it will blast you out of the room (well, at least in my case it does). I have a smaller living room and laminate floors so it is very loud and clear.
BTW- I posted these instructions on Direc-TV's forum as well. Direct-TV should be somewhat embarassed not having the proper instructions available. I spent hours trying to use codes that never worked via their instructions.
Follow up:
As pointed out to me from another poster, the Direct TV remote does not have learning capabilities, so my fix will not work well for a DirectTV remote. However, after using the same instructions while programming the Panasonic TV remote, I was able to get the volume up and down button to work successfully on the Direct-TV remote for the YAS-101 device. Hopefully, other remotes will work for you if the Direct-TV will not. It is definitely worth a try.

despite mixed bag of picky-picky reviews out there, this model admirably up to task to belt out movie soundtracks AND cd music, streaming, etc. built-in sub-woofer & mid-range both pleasant surprises much better than expected. you can hear the dynamics immediately. unless you demand vehicle-type sledgehammer bass you typically hear out on the streets, this one-piece unit more than adequate for interior dwelling. researched quite a few soundbars in showrooms in same price range + previously owned a couple other brands - none of them in same league as YAS-101 to my ears. this sets a new standard - enjoy!

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
We purchased this product to replace the Z-Vox 550 that we had been using. SInce both my wife and myself are getting hard of hearing we especially wanted something that made the TV dialog more understandable. The Yamaha was very easy to set up and it hooked readily to the subwoofer that we had already been using with the Z-Vox. The sound quality was just as good as the much more expensive Z-Vox and the understandablity was leagues better. We are extremely pleased with this unit.

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
Looking to upgrade from the stock speakers in my my Samsung 58" Plasma TV. Saw it recommended on CNET video podcast. Stock speakers in TV were not bad, so I was a little unsure how much better the YAS-101 would be. It did not disappoint. The virtual surround effect is pretty good, and bass response surprisingly good for an internal subwoofer. If you're looking to step up your TV sound quality and don't want to mess with a bunch of speakers and wires all over your room, this is the ticket. And the fact that its piano black finish matches my Samsung perfectly is a plus. I mounted it above the TV, even though the Yamaha instructions never show it that way, and it works very well. Voices seem so come right out of the characters mouths.
Only thing I miss is a digital readout of sound level on front of unit or on TV screen. Level lights are inexact, but can understand why this feature might have been left out to keep cost down.

Comments about Yamaha yas-101:
The soundbar is a very good upgrade from using the TV speakers. I didn't need to have a high powered surround sound system. The only thing to note, performance-wise, is that the subwoofer does need to be raised to its maximum for the best sound.
It took a couple of tries to program the Comcast remote for raising and lowering the sound volume. The only negative is that it doesn't seem to want to accept the programming for actually turning the soundbar on and off, though that is very minor. You also must use the included remote to mute the sound, if necessary. The "pass through" of the signal to the TV works just fine -the only "nit to pick" is that it also needs to be programmed to do that, which the description on the site doesn't mention. I was able to do that on the first try, and it works perfectly. As others have stated, if you have a 3D TV, it will block the sensor to the 3D glasses unless you raise your TV. If you don't have a 3D TV, then it isn't necessary.
The unit is a great value.
