Technology
3D

Yamaha receivers displaying this icon support 3D HDMI® pass-through from 3D-compatible Blu-ray Disc™, game and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs. 3D provides a more engaging audio and video consumer experience when using 3D-capable products and 3D media content. Note that special eyewear may be required for viewing 3D content.
UniVolume™

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
HDMI®

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. With the ability to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray Disc™ player, DVD player or AV receiver and a video monitor, such as a high-definition television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Depending on the model of product, HDMI can support standard, enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It can support all currently-available compressed audio formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS) and most newer HDMI devices can support lossless digital audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.
(View the specifications of each product for details on HDMI compatibility.)
AIR SURROUND XTREME

Achieves surround sound with clarity and sound imaging unlike any other two-speaker system. Hear clear dialogue from the front with distinctly separate surround sounds and smooth movement around the sound field. 7.1 channel technology - articulate sound source expressions from various directions: The AIR SURROUND XTREME has employs a virtual 7.1 channel technology that can independently recreate the surround channel and surround back channel in stereo. The result is clearly and amazingly identifiable sound sources from various directions. Position mode - sideways shift of the most effective listening point: This mode is capable of shifting the most effective listening spot on the row while keeping the sound field of a multi-channel program. The amazing ability to shift the best listening point by a mere balance adjustment provides an ideal surround effect, even when listening while not exactly in between two speakers. Wide mode - widening of the surround effective area: Wide mode is for two to three people listening laterally. Our original technology - "multi-point crosstalk canceling" process - creates a comfortable surround feeling in a much larger area, adding a further value to the AIR SURROUND XTREME for the enjoyment of more than two people.

Dolby® Digital

The most popular 5.1 channel home theater sound system. An improvement over Dolby® Pro Logic® in that it offers: 1) Full frequency response in all channels (3 Hz — 20 kHz), 2) discrete surround channels, and 3) a separate track for bass, only, called the Low-Frequency Effects channel.
DTS Digital Surround™

DTS Digital Surround™ was developed to replace the analog soundtracks of movies with a 6.1 channel digital sound track and is now rapidly gaining popularity in movie theaters around the world. DTS, Inc. has developed a home theater system so that you can enjoy the depth of sound and natural spatial representation of DTS Digital Surround™ in your home. This system produces practically distortion-free 6 channel sound (technically, front left and right, center, surround left and right and LFE 0.1 (subwoofer) channels for a total of 5.1 channels). This unit incorporates a DTS-ES decoder that enables 6.1 channel reproduction by adding the surround back channel to the existing 5.1 channel format.
Compressed Music Enhancer

Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

For the price I payed at [@] ([$]) this was a good buy. I do however think that the sound clarity could be better. Particularly it is difficult to hear voices, they easily become murky. Most likely this could be solved by better adjustment/calibration capabilities. It is not possible to adjust the sound too much, just bass/treble and balance between speakers. A full equalizer and a way to save the sound profiles would most likely have made this piece much better. Surround sound feel is pretty good with Bluray and DVD with latest surround features. Not like in the theater, but that can hardly be expected.

I bought this system to replace a stereo systemand the sound from the tv. After reading several reviews about this system and other systems I decided to purchase this system. The set-up was somewhat easy, and the sound is great. My only complaint is trying to preset radio stations for the FM tuner is quite a challenge. I have read and re-read the instructions and still not sure how to do this.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
I truly enjoy great sound, but my wife has an aversion to wires. Seeing the wire of a subwoofer outside the cabinet was a sore spot. When I saw the YHT-S400 with subwoofer integrated in the receiver, I knew that I would be able to get the sound I enjoy without exposing any wires. We were both happy with the appearance and delighted with the sound quality.

Tried to use the HDMI connections - PS3, cable box and BluRay player to Yamaha, then from Yamaha to TV. All was okay until I tried to use the TV's external speaker out connections. No audio. This was to be for the wireless headphone for my wife to use at night. Had to move all HDMI connections to the TV, then use optical connection from TV to Yamaha unit. Works okay, but not what I wanted to do. Sound is good, like the settings features. Would recommend to a friend, much better than TV speakers.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
Bought this to replace Bose Cinemate system. Much easier to install with play through as all signals go through the HDMI cable into the Yamaha, and then the video signal is passed back through to the television. We were able to get rid of cables and still get great picture. I do not use 3D, so I cannot comment on that pass through. The sound, though not truly surrounding, is great. You can hear voices clearly, music sounds terrific, and the bass easily can get to picture shaking levels. I would easily recommend this over the Bose system.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
A nice system. Definately an upgrade to using your TV's built in speakers. Not as good as having a multiple speaker system. Does sound very good with blue ray. The set up could've been much easier with a well documented manual. Would be nice if manual gave a code for using a universal remote. Have found that connecting an ipod works well hooking it up through the analog connection. Don't need to get the optional ipod docking station. Only drawback is the ipod doesn't charge this way, but sounds great.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
I did quite a bit of shopping for sound bars before deciding on this product. I bought this product mainly because of the name and the good reviews.
Since I am technically challenged, I thought it might be a real problem in setting it up. But it was rather easy and the sound is fantastic. I am glad that I bought this product and would do so again.
