CD-R/RW Disc Compatibility
This CD changer can handle CD-R and CD-RW discs with ordinary songs. (Note that some discs may not play.)
40-Track Random Access Programmable Play and Clear
It's extremely easy to program the tracks you want to hear in any order. You can clear the programme at any time with a single touch.
RS-232C Interface
An RS-232C interface is provided so this player can be controlled via computer in a custom installation.
Peak Search
Gives you better sounding recording by searching the disc for the loudness part and playing it for a few seconds so you can set the proper recording level.
CD-Tape Synchro Rec Start
You'll have smooth recording starts each time, because Synchro Rec Start puts the deck into the recording mode a few seconds before starting CD play.
Disc (Intro) Scan
Automatically plays the first 8 seconds of each disc so you can decide which to listen to first.
3-Mode CD Text Display
Get information about the CD currently playing right on the CD player's display. The 3- mode CD Text display shows the CD's title, the artist's name and the title of the track.
Random Play (Single/All) with Disc-to-Disc Random Play
Use Random Play to mix selections from various discs or to hear old CDs in the new way.
Repeat Play (Disc Mode: Single/All; Repeat Mode: Single/Full)
To hear your favorite songs again or just for back ground music, this versatile changer gives you a variety of options.
Music/Skip/Index Search
Music and Skip Search lets you find songs quickly, while Index Search moves the pickup to the index marks encoded on some discs.
Disc Stabilizer
Yamaha's new Mechanism uses a both belt and gear drive to ensure smooth disc rotation and plastic rollers under the tray to allow it to move more smoothly. The disc being played is isolated from vibration on a separate tray, and held in place by a disc stabilizer. The entire disc changing system thus helps to maximize sound quality.
Laser Pickup Floating Mechanism
The laser pickup is isolated on a floating mechanism so its delicate operation cannot be affected by vibration.
Intelligent Digital Servo System
Conventional tracking servo circuitry cannot completely overcome errors caused by disc defects, warpage, dust and so on. This system uses a microcomputer to monitor the signal, adjusting pickup tracking and focus, as well as spindle motor speed, to compensate for any problems.
High Performance Parts and Circuitry Used Throughout
Because every single part affects sound quality, Yamaha uses nothing but the best. The special Low-Impedance Power Supply, for example, uses extra thick wires to ensure that power is absolutely stable even under low-impedance conditions.
Technology
PlayXchange

Yamaha CD changers give you the benefits of extended playing time and direct selection from all discs. And with PlayXchange, you can change discs while the current one continues to play. You don't have to interrupt the music to change a disc and you're not limited to changing only one disc at a time.
CD Text Display

Get information about the CD currently playing right on the CD player’s display. The 3-mode text display shows the CD’s title, the artists name and the title of the track.

I bought this unit to replace a JVC 5 disk changer that stopped playing full cds. If they went beyond 72 minutes or so, that was it. I had the jvc for at least 15 years and got my money out of it. I am somewhat an audiofile with a Rotel receiver and Thiel speakers. I like good sound. Unfortunately, I also have a mild case of tinnitus. Because of that I was not interested in spending several hundred dollars for something on the level of an Arcam, or similar premium equipment.
I was leaning toward a Denon changer, but online reviews led me to rethink that, as did reviews for Sony products. But, the Yamaha changer reviews were generally favorable. I bought online without listening to a store demo. After all, zeros and ones, are zeros and ones.
I do not know whether it is psychological or actual, but the Yamaha does sound somewhat better than my previous equipment. There is more definition, a more defined stereo spread, not exactly air around the instruments, but certainly a degree of presence.
I like the fact that I can load a fresh cd at any time without interupting what I am currently listening to. I note that some people miss a headphone receptacle, but since I do not use that equipment, it does not bother me.
I have only had the Yamaha for a couple of weeks. But, early listening has been very pleasant and I am happy with the equipment. I think this is a quality product that delivers the goods at a reasonable price.

Comments about Yamaha cdc-697:
Sounds great so far, after a month. Yahama products are good in general. Love the ability to change 4 discs while the 5th is playing. The only con, is that the RANDOM feature is only available on the remote. I never used the remote on my old player but usually used the RANDOM feature. Now I need to use the remote, for that feature only. How hard would it be to have a "remote" button on the unit, like my previous Yamaha did?

Comments about Yamaha cdc-697:
This unit is part of an audiophile system set up to playback audiophile-grade vinyl LPs burned to CDs. The sound is true to the richer and fuller analog waves and I have yet to have any problem playing burned to disk CD-ROMs.
A great feature is being able to load the tray without needing to skip-disk the carousel. One especially nice feature is being able to set the display to any number of formats; my preferred way is to show the song titles.
Overall, I do not think that you can find any other CD player as good as this one in this price range or even in the next tier price-range.

Comments about Yamaha cdc-697:
I'm an elderly, nealy 80-year-od man who has enjoyed classical music since my teens. This product replaced an earlier Yamaha 5-CD player but stopped working well. This new one I bought very recently and, so far, it has been working perfectly

Comments about Yamaha cdc-697:
I got the CDC-697 to replace a Yamaha CDC-755 that gave out after 15 years of wonderful service. That 755 definitely spoiled me: it had a smooth, sweet sound that gave the lie to all those who said you couldn't get a pleasing, warm sound in a reasonably priced CD player. For my eclectic tastes that run from classical to country and my purest preference for a "flat" natural sound this made the 755 the absolute perfect player for me. The 697, which was the closest Yamaha changer I could find on the market today to the 755, is not quite in the same league. It seems weaker in the bass, and the overall sound is more shrill. In other words, it suffers from precisely that lack of warmth often associated with cd's. All that being said, the stereo separation is better than on my older unit, and overall the player still seems to offer the kind of quality I associate with Yamaha player-changers. So, even though my own bar may be set too high to give the 697 a five-star rating, it still seems like a good, solid unit that I expect I'll gradually adjust to.
