Sound Bar with Wireless Active Subwoofer Delivers Superior Surround Sound from TV and Blu-ray Disc™ Sources
This two-component system composed of a sound bar and subwoofer produces 160 W of total power. Clear, realistic, all-enveloping surround sound from the sound bar and deep bass from the subwoofer ensure high audio performance from TV and Blu-ray sources.

Sound Bar Produces Expansive and Clear Surround Sound
The sound bar houses a digital amp and two 2 1/8” (5.5 cm) cone speakers with large magnets to ensure high sound clarity. Its superb structural design allows high capacity cabinet volume for very powerful and clear sound, even though the body is very slim.

Wireless Active Subwoofer with Advanced YST II Reproduces Deep Bass with Clarity and Power
This 6 1⁄2” (16 cm) subwoofer features a large magnet and a front-firing configuration. Its high sound quality design takes advantage of Yamaha’s proprietary Advanced YST II and a Linear Port to produce deep and smooth bass. The circuit board has an ideal grounding pattern that ensures stable current supply for prodigious bass output. This subwoofer is capable of delivering powerful movie effect sounds and rich, deep bass.

AIR SURROUND XTREME Provides Powerful Surround Sound
Yamaha’s exclusive AIR SURROUND XTREME reproduces 7.1 channel surround sound with high quality, excellent imaging and rich presence, far superior to that of any other sound bar. You’ll experience an extremely realistic and impressive sound field, with clear dialogue in the front and dynamic sound action at the back.

Compatible with Various Surround Sound Formats
The YAS-201 is compatible with popular surround sound formats, such as Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround, so you get the full effect of multichannel movie sound.
Clear Voice Makes Dialogue and Narrations Easy to Hear
Clear Voice raises the level of dialogue and narrations while maintaining overall sound quality. Movies and TV shows, sports commentary and news broadcasts are more clearly audible.
UniVolume Maintains the Same Volume Level
This welcome feature, made possible by Yamaha-developed technology, maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. It can be switched on and off.

Stylish Design Achieves Both Visual Beauty and Ease of Use

Low enough to be placed neatly in front of a TV, the body has an elegantly curved front surface. Its glossy black finish matches flat-screen TVs and will add a stylish accent to your entertainment area.
Convenient Positioning in Front of a TV Set
With a height of only 3 7/8” (9.8 cm), the sound bar can be easily positioned in front of a TV so it straddles the TV stand. With the stand removed, the height can be adjusted.

Sound Bar Can Also Be Hung on a Wall

If the TV is hanging on a wall, you can remove the stand and hang the sound bar on the wall as well.
Wireless Active Subwoofer Allows Flexible Placement

The wireless subwoofer does not have to be connected to the sound bar, so setup and placement is faster and easier. This is a convenient subwoofer that delivers powerful, high-quality bass sound.
TV Remote Repeater for Signal Transmission

Even if the YAS-201 blocks the TV, the Remote Repeater on the rear of the sound bar transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.
Learning Function Allows Operation with the TV Remote Control
The YAS-201 can "learn" the TV remote control operation, so you can use the TV remote control to easily turn the YAS-201 on and off and to adjust its volume.
Wireless Streaming from iPod®/iPhone®/iPad® and Mac®/PC
The optional YIT-W12 Wireless Transmitter lets you enjoy music wirelessly from your iPod/iPhone/iPad or Mac/PC. The yAired technology developed by Yamaha provides uncompressed linear PCM transmission for clear, accurate sound output.

Simple to Operate Remote Control Supplied

The YAS-201 remote is simple and easy to use. It lets you turn the power on and off, adjust the volume and do other basic operations, and even lets you switch the surround modes. Together with the Learning function, you can use either the TV remote or the Yamaha remote for easy operation.
Technology
Dolby® Digital

The most popular 5.1 channel home theater sound system. An improvement over Dolby® Pro Logic® in that it offers: 1) Full frequency response in all channels (3 Hz — 20 kHz), 2) discrete surround channels, and 3) a separate track for bass, only, called the Low-Frequency Effects channel.
DTS Digital Surround™

DTS Digital Surround™ was developed to replace the analog soundtracks of movies with a 6.1 channel digital sound track and is now rapidly gaining popularity in movie theaters around the world. DTS, Inc. has developed a home theater system so that you can enjoy the depth of sound and natural spatial representation of DTS Digital Surround™ in your home. This system produces practically distortion-free 6 channel sound (technically, front left and right, center, surround left and right and LFE 0.1 (subwoofer) channels for a total of 5.1 channels). This unit incorporates a DTS-ES decoder that enables 6.1 channel reproduction by adding the surround back channel to the existing 5.1 channel format.
AIR SURROUND XTREME

AIR SURROUND XTREME employs a virtual 7.1 channel technology that generates surround and surround back sound images without using dedicated surround speakers. The result is accurate sound directionality while maintaining an immersive surround sound envelopment. Hear clear dialogue from the front while distinctly separate surround effects move smoothly throughout the entire sound field.
UniVolume™

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
Advanced YST

Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.
yAired

yAired technology uses lossless (uncompressed) signal transmission to achieve wireless sound quality that is as good as wired quality and the perfect synchronization between sounds and images for movies.

Comments about Yamaha yas-201_black_u:
I used this Yamaha to replace a very rare Niro1 single-point surround system that died. At 1/4 the cost of the Niro, wasn't expecting the world... and while there are some things I miss, I'm very impressed with the Yamaha's performance for the money.
In stereo mode, the speakers provide enough separation to get a good feel for the stereo image of a mix, be it music or film. The subwoofer provides enough bass to make itself known but not overwhelm the sound, as it should be. Many reviewers complain that it isn't powerful enough, but from a technical standpoint, the sub's output is true to the audio and fills out the mix very well. My main complaint isn't with the sub, but instead with the lack of tweeters. With only two drivers, the crispness and clarity of some high frequencies get flattened out and disappear into the mix.
With only two drivers, (as opposed to the 5-7 that the Niro and other higher end bars have), the surround processing is not that impressive. Don't get me wrong, it's much better than the speakers that came with your TV... but it doesn't really "fill the room" with sound like multi-driver one-point systems can. Be sure to use stereo mode for all two-channel listening... leaving it in surround results in a midrange-heavy "phasey" sort of sound.
It may sound like I'm not happy, but I'm just very particular about sound. It does sound very good, especially for the price.
As to the design, it's just brilliant. There's no central amplifier to worry about, no complicated menus or adjustments, just two optical inputs and a very simple and straightforward remote. That it also learns your TV's remote and relays the IR through the rear panel is also a brilliant feature. The simplicity and overall appearance are excellent.
In the end, while it doesn't quite match my $1400 multi-driver soundbar's audio performance, it still makes great sound, and in many ways is a lot easier to live with and enjoy - especially at 1/4 the price.

YAS-201 Performance
By o2
from California
Pros
- Good Remote
Cons
- Bass Volume Is To Low
- Unable To Learn Mute
Best Uses
Comments about Yamaha yas-201_black_u:
For a 2.1 sound bar, the YAS-201 offers excellent sound. It definitely enhances the TV sound. I wish the mute button on the remote could be transferred to my cable remote. This is a definite disadvantage. To use the mute button, this forces us to a 2 remote system which defeats the purpose of the "learn" technology. Also, the bass at it's highest setting is still low. Yamaha, is there any to overclock the subwoofer to increase the volume?

Comments about Yamaha yas-201_black_u:
Sound quality is great. Clear Voice feature keeps all voices audible so you don't miss one-off phrases. Univoice feature keeps volume uniform from commercial to commercial. Surround sound replication best heard in a small living room. Do not buy if you have a large living room. The bass is nice for low ends and 'quiet rumbles' but is lacking in overall oomph given the size of the subwoofer. Very simple to connect to TV. Sometimes, the wireless subwoofer interferes with the wireless signal on my computer, which is annoying. All in all, however, this is a great soundbar system value given the price vs. the quality of what you get. You can train the remote to learn the volume setting on your other remote, but you can't tell when you've reached the highest volume, which is annoying.

I purchased this Yamaha soundbar to enhance the sound of everyday programming. It has exceeded my expectations. I don't know how I watched TV without it. It was very simple to install and set up.
I also bought the YIT w12 wireless transmitter which lets me play my IPOD music. Wow, that's incredible!!!

Comments about Yamaha yas-201_black_u:
Am enjoying this system since it does add significant dimension to my HDTV speakers. However, I selected this Yamaha system as a compromise since my room is too open to allow cabling for a high quality 5.1/7.1 surround system, and I watch very few action movies (or Blue-Ray DVD's). I consider this Yamaha system an excellent value and a good compromise. In the future, I will be looking for a full surround system with all wireless speakers.

I bought the Yamaha YAS-201 two days before Christmas to compliment my first HD tv. After opening presents Christmas morning, my family watched Brave, first movie watched with soundbar, and everyone was impressed with the sound quality especially the subwoofer. Due to lack of wireless capabilities, the only con it has, I use my Apple tv to stream movies and music and I couldn't be happier with this product.

Comments about Yamaha yas-201_black_u:
This is a great product. Looks good with the tv. Doesn't stand out to far from where your flat screen will sit on the wall. The sub is wireless and works great. Can just move it around to where is best for your house. This gives great sound for what it is. If you are looking to rattle your house this isn't the system for you. But it does give really nice clear sound and bass for normal tv and movie watchers. Hardcore enthusiasts will be better off with a bigger system. But for anyone who wants to just make there big screen have good sound since the tv speakers are garbage this is a great piece of equipment. Yamaha always delivers good quality products.
