Technology
3D

Yamaha receivers displaying this icon support 3D HDMI® pass-through from 3D-compatible Blu-ray Disc™, game and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs. 3D provides a more engaging audio and video consumer experience when using 3D-capable products and 3D media content. Note that special eyewear may be required for viewing 3D content.
UniVolume™

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
HDMI®

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. With the ability to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray Disc™ player, DVD player or AV receiver and a video monitor, such as a high-definition television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Depending on the model of product, HDMI can support standard, enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It can support all currently-available compressed audio formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS) and most newer HDMI devices can support lossless digital audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.
(View the specifications of each product for details on HDMI compatibility.)
AIR SURROUND XTREME

Achieves surround sound with clarity and sound imaging unlike any other two-speaker system. Hear clear dialogue from the front with distinctly separate surround sounds and smooth movement around the sound field. 7.1 channel technology - articulate sound source expressions from various directions: The AIR SURROUND XTREME has employs a virtual 7.1 channel technology that can independently recreate the surround channel and surround back channel in stereo. The result is clearly and amazingly identifiable sound sources from various directions. Position mode - sideways shift of the most effective listening point: This mode is capable of shifting the most effective listening spot on the row while keeping the sound field of a multi-channel program. The amazing ability to shift the best listening point by a mere balance adjustment provides an ideal surround effect, even when listening while not exactly in between two speakers. Wide mode - widening of the surround effective area: Wide mode is for two to three people listening laterally. Our original technology - "multi-point crosstalk canceling" process - creates a comfortable surround feeling in a much larger area, adding a further value to the AIR SURROUND XTREME for the enjoyment of more than two people.

Dolby® Digital

The most popular 5.1 channel home theater sound system. An improvement over Dolby® Pro Logic® in that it offers: 1) Full frequency response in all channels (3 Hz — 20 kHz), 2) discrete surround channels, and 3) a separate track for bass, only, called the Low-Frequency Effects channel.
DTS Digital Surround™

DTS Digital Surround™ was developed to replace the analog soundtracks of movies with a 6.1 channel digital sound track and is now rapidly gaining popularity in movie theaters around the world. DTS, Inc. has developed a home theater system so that you can enjoy the depth of sound and natural spatial representation of DTS Digital Surround™ in your home. This system produces practically distortion-free 6 channel sound (technically, front left and right, center, surround left and right and LFE 0.1 (subwoofer) channels for a total of 5.1 channels). This unit incorporates a DTS-ES decoder that enables 6.1 channel reproduction by adding the surround back channel to the existing 5.1 channel format.
Compressed Music Enhancer

Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

I got this set up with a Sony 46" bravia and a Sony bluray player and this just floods the whole living room with perfect sound ..I have had serveral sound bars from Pyle to Dynavox and Sony sound systems and i have to say this one is the BEST i have ever heard .
The center sound bar sits perfectly over my sony bluray player (with stands mounted) and under the tv and the sub is on the second shelf all looks and sounds great ..

For the price I payed at [@] ([$]) this was a good buy. I do however think that the sound clarity could be better. Particularly it is difficult to hear voices, they easily become murky. Most likely this could be solved by better adjustment/calibration capabilities. It is not possible to adjust the sound too much, just bass/treble and balance between speakers. A full equalizer and a way to save the sound profiles would most likely have made this piece much better. Surround sound feel is pretty good with Bluray and DVD with latest surround features. Not like in the theater, but that can hardly be expected.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
I had an older 5.1 audio system with five speakers and a subwoofer before acquiring my Yamaha YHT-S400 system, and the Yamaha's one single speaker bar seems no match for the five separate speakers I had, although perceptions of audio quality are subtle and perhaps raising the volume would bring out the touted 7.1 quality of the new unit. The YHT-S400 wiring setup is modern and adequate. I find it a bit annoying that the unit's front screen displays the words movie or music when I am simply watching the news on television. My first item of business after setting up the YHT-S400 was to attempt to program my Comcast remote so I could enjoy TV without being forced to use the separate smallish Yamaha remote to mute commercials. Unfortunately, neither I nor my adult son (who has an electronics engineering degree and works in the field) could find a working code for the Yamaha YHT-S400 system that would have enabled the Comcast remote to control the Yamaha system. I ended up buying a Logitech Harmony 650 remote, programmable through a computer connection and the internet, which now does the job quite well: it controls my DVD player as well, and thus replaces all the other remotes (cable box, TV, sound, DVD). Registering my new unit on the internet with Yamaha was more difficult than I expected, but I finally succeeded. I am unable to compare my new audio system with all the others in the market out there, but I find it compact, versatile, modern and responsive to my need for better sound than TV speakers provide.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
This system fits the bill for use in front of the TV, it has a very low profile, 2" or with riser legs, 2-3/4". The sub-woofer unit fits in nicely, and with the FM tuner as an added bonus. The price is a little high, but if you shop around, you can get this system at most dealers at [$] I saw an ad for this unit for [$] on sale as a [@]I tried another major brand twice, and had trouble both times, so I returned them, got this unit. Best move I made.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
I was not happy with the speakers/sound from my flat screen TV and had been looking to upgrade my TV audio. I had limited space and did not want to install rear speakers so the sound bar system was a good fit.
What caught my eye about this system:
The low profile of the sound bar itself - I am using the feet mounts and the sound bar sits comfortably in front of and just to the lower edge of the TV. It blends in quite nicely. I have a 42" LCD TV.
The ability to adjust the speakers in the sound bar - I had seen reviews of other sound bar products that lacked this capability and it resulted in having nice sound, but did not resolve the issue of setting the dialog to a good level. This unit gives the ability to adjust subwoofer, surround and center speakers.
The Yamaha name.
Sound from the TV is great as is the sound from DVD's. Though the FM receiver is adequate I have been using internet radio and this system is really an upgrade for that.
I have recommended this product to others and would buy it again.
I am very pleased with the product. The only complaint, is that the receiver is a bit large, but then it also includes the subwoofer.

Comments about Yamaha yht-s400_black__u:
This Yamaha is truly amazing! It has exceeded my expectations for a surround system. I honestly have to keep it on a -1 for regular TV programs. I take it up to a +2 for dvd's. Everyone that listens to my system marvels and comments that it sounds just like being at the Theatre, thats coming from teenagers and adults alike. Keep this up Yamaha and you will have a customer for life!
