The YSP-5100 achieves true surround sound by directing sound beams off the walls to reach the listener from various angles. The main mode is 5 BeamPlus2 for 7-channel sources. In addition, there is a wide variety of other listening modes. You can select 3 Beam + Stereo + 2, 5 Beam, 3 Beam + Stereo, 3 Beam or Stereo, depending on the type of source and your room acoustics.
The YSP-5100 applies this sophisticated technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it through multiple beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off walls. The result is true multi-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system – but without the need for extra speakers!
This slim unit has everything necessary for projecting true surround sound built-in: DSP for Digital Signal Processor, 40 beam drivers, two woofers, two tweeters and digital amplifiers. The two built-in tweeters ensure high stereo sound quality. No other receiver, amplifier or speakers are necessary, making the system extremely compact and economical. This also makes it handy for use in a different room (zone) in a custom multi-zone system. What's more, the shape is even thinner (3 1/2” depth) than previous models.
The YSP-5100 provides HDMI connections (4 in/1 out) with support for 1080p resolution. You can connect multiple HDMI sources and enjoy the highest possible video quality when using a 1080p monitor. It is also capable of repeating 1080p/24fps signals from HDMI input to output, maintaining the superior image quality from Blu-ray Disc players and HDTV set top boxes. HDMI also provides the benefits of Deep Color, x.v.Color and Auto Lip-Sync.
The YSP-5100 provides upconversion of video composite and component signals to HDMI. The signal can then be output via a single HDMI cable to a monitor for enjoying high-definition video quality.
This Yamaha exclusive feature ensures optimum multi-channel sound reproduction with accurate image location. By monitoring and analyzing the sound with the microphone included with the YSP-5100, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimizing the level and frequency response of each beam. It also offers Direct Start function via remote unit. This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect.
This welcome feature, made possible by Yamaha-developed technology, maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. It can be switched on and off.
When the YSP-5100 is connected to a CEC compatible TV, the YSP-5100 will turn on and off together with the TV, also allowing you to use the TV remote unit to control the YSP-5100 volume. With CEC engaged, signals will pass through the YSP-5100 even if it is off. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components.
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.
Thanks to Yamaha's yAired™ technology, you can use your YSP-5100 with an iPod and subwoofer without having to connect any cables. The yAired™ link transmits uncompressed data (linear PCM) so there is no loss of signal data, unlike systems that use Bluetooth technology to send compressed data. This ensures maximum sound quality. The PDX-50TX provides wireless connection capability to your iPod. This allows you to use the iPod as a remote control while listening to your iPod music, and provides synchronized power on/off. In addition, the iPod charges when it is in the included charging cradle. The SWK-W10 allows the wireless connection of any subwoofer, highly recommended for boosting bass sound. Both of these kits can be used together; when doing so, turning on the iPod automatically turns on the YSP-5100 and the subwoofer.

Dolby Pro Logic II is an improved technique used to decode vast numbers of existing Dolby Surround sources. This technology enables a discrete 5-channel playback with 2 front left and right channels, 1 center channel, and 2 surround left and right channels instead of only 1 surround channel for conventional Pro Logic technology. There are three modes available: “Music mode” for music sources, “Movie mode” for movie sources and “Game mode” for game sources.

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
This unit creates a sound field by reflecting sound beams on the walls of your listening room and by broadening the cohesion of all the channels. Just as you would arrange the speaker position of other audio systems, you need to set the beam angle to enjoy the best possible sound from this unit. This unit employs the beam optimization and sound optimization features with the aid of the supplied IntelliBeam microphone, allowing you to avoid troublesome listening-based setup and achieving highly accurate sound adjustments that best match your listening environment. We call these two features “IntelliBeam” generically.
Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects from ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater! The decoding circuitry performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES (DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1), DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24 decoding with extreme accuracy, as well as all digital sound field processing.
Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.
Yamaha receivers displaying this icon support 3D HDMI® pass-through from 3D-compatible Blu-ray Disc™, game and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs. 3D provides a more engaging audio and video consumer experience when using 3D-capable products and 3D media content. The primary advantage of the YSP Series is that simply placing a unit in the front of a room provides true surround sound, which you hear from the front and rear and also the left and right. Its key technologies are the production of sound beams via the control of multiple built-in speakers, and IntelliBeam, which automatically sets the optimum sound field for the size and shape of the room. Thanks to these two technologies, the YSP Series can reproduce 7.1-channel surround sound that is natural with an expansive feeling, qualities that cannot be achieved by virtual surround systems.
The front surface of a YSP unit features a number of compact beam speakers* installed in orderly rows. Control of each of these speakers on a time axis by individual amps creates five sound beams. Bouncing these sound beams off walls creates a surround environment.

Superimposing sound waves from the compact speakers installed in a row and adjusting their direction by delay control causes the axes of the sound waves to converge in a specified direction.
Sound produced from the speakers is transmitted radially from the sound source, like an expanding ripple (Fig. 1).
The sound waves from two speakers are superimposed, creating interference (Fig. 2).
If the number of speakers in adjoining locations is increased, the sound waves are superimposed even more, so the sound is transmitted as a single strong wave. This is a sound beam (Fig. 3).
By using a processor (dedicated Yamaha LSI) to control the times when each speaker produces sound, the direction of the sound beams can be controlled (Fig. 4).
Controlling the directions of the beams to bounce them off the walls enables the sound to come from five directions: front left and right, rear left and right, and center. Models from the YSP-4100 and up create two phantom sound sources in addition to the five beams, to provide 7.1-channel surround sound.
When the microphone is placed at the listening position, it searches for the places suitable for reflecting the beams while it checks the size and shape of the room and the quality of the wall material, in order to automatically adjust the beam angle, the volume and the sound quality. This makes it easy to achieve the best surround sound environment.
YSP models achieve real multi-channel surround by, not virtually but actually, bouncing sound beams off walls. This provides three major benefits.
YSP models naturally expand the sound radiated onto the walls, producing surround sound without the unnatural feeling of sound linkages between the channels.
YSP models provide ideal family listening, because the listening area is wider than with conventional virtual surround sound.
Ordinary virtual surround systems often sound different to different people because the surround sound is created artificially. This causes some people to become tired of listening after a certain amount of time. With YSP models, sound bounced off walls actually comes from behind the listeners, which means there is little difference in its effect between individuals, and people are unlikely to experience listening fatigue, even after long periods.

Sais what it does and does a great job. I have a large 400 square foot room and it sound incredible. I do however think that this unit should have bluetooth capability for it being 2k.. I also cant sync any of my remotes to its IR to use just one of my other remotes. I docking station is nice, but its only 15 feet away from the unit across the room and it cuts out once in a while.

The unit performed as advertised. I am using it in a small rectangular room with reflective walls and no obstructions to the sound beam's incidents or reflections. The YSP-5100's subwoofer output feeds a SVSOUND AS-EQ1, AUDYSSEY MultEQ XT based, subwoofer equalizer. The EQ1 has dual outputs which feeds two JBL PSW-D115 subwoofers that are each positioned against, and midway along each of the opposite longside walls. I perceive the sound, on some source material, to be enveloping, and expansive way beyond the confines of the room with "ACCURATE" bass on all material, even in this small room.

Upgraded from the YSP-4000 to support 3D signal pass-thru. Yamaha delivers first-rate audio experience as always. Amazing performance without running wires to speakers throughout a room. Guests routinely admire the audio experience especially for movies and concerts. If money is no object and room is pre-wired, buy individual speakers and enjoy. Otherwise, give this a listen.
Features. Accomodates every current format. Sound Projection that can fool most ears. Simple on-screen setup (out of the box to cleaning up the mess was under an hour). Works with Blue-ray and standard DVD player (even specially chipped PAL DVD player). Wireless iPod/iPhone connectivity a big hit also. Price point is high, but it is a Yamaha. Unit will not suffice wthout a quality Subwoofer.

I don't want a bunch of speakers scattered throughout by room. This is my second "sound-bar" type system (the first was a Niro). The iPod connector is great (plug it into iPod and the system turns on)! I got the sub-woofer later, which was a great improvement. Should be included.
I've tried connecting my Wii, but I don't get any sound. Had to go back to connecting the Wii straight to the TV. I assume this is possible and just need to do some research.
I had thought it supported a feature whereby the Yamaha turns on automatically when I turn on my year-old LG TV. Gave up on this and will be getting a Harmony One universal remote to deal with all of my devices.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

This soundbar sounds great, delivering full enveloping music, BUT... When using this system for watching DVD's, forget it! The system works great and as it is supposed to when watching Blue-Ray DVD's, but when trying to watch regular DVD's the system has a problem processing the audio and video signals I guess because at about the 20 minute mark in the movie, the fun starts. The system looses the audio and video signal for about 5 seconds. You're left looking at a blank screen! By the end of the movie this happens about every 10 minutes. It might not be so bad if someone could tell me what to do, or how to fix the problem. But when I called Yamaha for help, I was told to call where I bought it for help, even after explaining I had already spoken with them and they didn't know how to fix the problem either. So I paid $$$$ for what?
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

I was really hoping the 5100 would solve some of the issues with the 4100, but instead it took out its best features.
1. The MyBeam options is the best feature of the 4100. The soundbar directs the speakers right to you and highlights the voices. My wife is from Germany and as a non-native speaker she finds it very difficult to understand what people are saying, especially in less than optimal recordings. The mybeam mode makes understanding speech much, much easier. We have been listing to it for the past 4 years and we like it better than the full 5 channel sound.
This mybeam mode is perfect for those times when you don't want to turn it up loud and bother the neighbors, but still want to enjoy watching TV. No other mode allows you to turn the sound down as low and be perfectly understandable.
2. Headphone jack. There is none. Who makes such a device that doesn't allow you to output the sound to headphones? Yamaha does. For this reason alone, I have had to route everything into the TV, then out to the YSP, just to use headphones.
The 5100 has better inputs and outputs and if you have a lot of devices, this may be the way you want to go, but for me the 4100 is still the way to go for the mybeam mode alone. Sure it is not for everyone, but there are times when it is needed, so why take it out?
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
