When choosing reference monitors for mixing and music production, accuracy is the prime consideration. Speakers that sound "good" on first impression may not necessarily be accurate. What you really need is an honest reference for your mix, rather than monitors that have been tweaked or colored to deceptively sound impressive.
The new HS series reference monitors have been created by Yamaha's studio monitor engineering team to deliver exceptionally flat, accurate response that you can trust. Unlike "monitor" speakers with exaggerated bass and treble that make a good first impression but can't be relied on for accuracy, the HS series were designed to be true studio reference monitors in the tradition of the legendary Yamaha NS10M.
Whether you're mixing for stereo or 5.1 surround, mixes that sound good on Yamaha HS series reference monitors will translate accurately to the widest possible range of reproduction systems … which is engineer-speak that simply means they'll sound good on anything. And that is the ultimate goal of any reference monitor. We should also mention that the HS-series monitors not only sound great, they look great, too.

The new HS Series powered monitors were designed to be true studio reference monitors in the tradition of the famous NS10Ms. When choosing your next pair of near field reference monitors, remember it's not just important that they sound good; they have to be an honest reference for your mix. The new HS Series of reference monitors were designed to give you exceptionally flat response so you can really trust what you hear. That means that mixes that sound good on Yamaha HS speakers will sound good on anything. In fact, that's the ultimate test of a reference monitor. Even better than that, HS series speakers not only sound good, they look great, too.
The HS Series is a two-way, internally powered speaker system designed to provide affordable, high quality reference monitoring for all types of recording and multimedia applications – home studios, computer-based music production, gaming systems, keyboards rigs and personal computer systems. All products are sold and packaged individually, making it easy to build flexible monitor setups and 5.1 systems.
The 70-watt HS50M (5-in. cone and 3/4-in. dome tweeter) and 120-watt HS80M (8-in. cone and 1-in. dome tweeter) are housed in bass reflex-type cabinets, and reproduce surprisingly tight low end and smooth, high frequency response to beyond 20 kHz. Inputs include a balanced XLR and 1/4-in. phone jack. In addition to master level controls, each speaker has trim switches that allow you to custom-tailor low, mid and high frequency response for different applications.
Okay, let me tell that, I'm an upcoming audio engineer building my own home studio. Let me say that these monitors are spot on! They sound amazing! They are truly accurate! I'm truly satisfied with it! I bought it early this year, and I'm not regretting not even once! The amount of detail you get on the mids and highs. The bass response. Everything is just amazing! I did a few songs, a radio show type recording, and it sounded great everywhere else be it car, headphones or small radio speakers. This is truly a wonderful choice anyone could make! I would suggest this to anybody! A great product! Great monitor speakers! Awesome job Yamaha!
I got these and instantly fell in love with them having used NS10's before I noticed that they where nothing like them they where not as harsh but these are still not forgiving they are acturate and translate very easy. the part I do love very much about these though is they are configurable with the eq on the back if you look it up on the web you can find that if you mess with the eq they sound almost exactly like NS10's I switch betweet setting when i want to mix then listen to something harsh and unforgiving. the detail on these is amazing and i love them.
Been using them for my music production. Very good for mixing. "U need to own a One, to believe you are 1". ;) Was blow away when i heard my old mix they were so out of place due to my old monitors. Well to re-frame it i will take that as my learning experience as i get better with best equipment around.
I read a lot of speaker reviews and forums. These seem to be everyone's favorite choice for studio work. Sounds great, plenty of bass so I had to use the built-in EQ to reduce it so the neighbors would not form a lynch mob. There's no grill protecting the speakers but ideally you are supposed to mount them at ear level anyway (away from kids and pets).
