Comments about Yamaha trbx174:
I've had this bass for about a month now and I love it. The weight feels just about right, not too heavy and not too light. I took it out from the box, tuned it and played, nothing else had to be done. The action is very nice, and there is no fret buzz anywhere.
The split pickup sounds very nice; nicer than the J pickup, if you ask me. The J pickup seems to have almost a weaker sound, especially on the A string for some reason.
You have two volume knobs and a tone knob, so you can choose whichever sound you like and they seem to do their job fairly well.
Tuners are decent, they hold the tuning long enough. I had to retune it once or twice during the first several days, due to the strings being new.
If I had to name something negative, it would be the way that the split pickup is mounted on the bass. It has a screw right where my thumbs wants to rest. Its not the most comfortable position, so I have to shift to the side of it, but then i'm left with very little space. But looking at other inexpensive basses - they seem to have the same pickups.
Overall, I really like it. I have the violin sunburst version and it looks incredible. You could never tell that its a "beginner" bass or anything like that. Yamaha really did put a lot of quality in this thing and if I decide to upgrade - I think I'll go for a Yamaha again.
