Comments about Yamaha motif_es6:
I purchased this keyboard in 2005 after my Motif Classic was involved in an accident. I loved my Classic (61 key) and was even more excited to learn that I could upgrade for the same price. The ES was a definite upgrade from the Classic and I will break down some of these improvements.
Firstly Yamaha upgraded the sounds on the entire board. This is a big deal because I do not feel they upgraded the sounds on the XS. That board was a let down and I never purchased it as a result (but that is besides the point). The piano sounds are awesome! Nice and crisp with nice low end as well. The acoustic guitars are nice esp. with the arpeggiator. Electric pianos are really nice with plenty of variety. I love the Organs on here esp. the fact that you can use the volume faders as drawbars. Really gives you that feeling of a Hammond, but on a SMALL SCALE. The rotary works much better than Roland RD and Korg Triton in my opinion.
I also like the octave buttons which are conveniently placed on the left side by the modulation. I do not care too much for the strings and brass. They are too thin for my liking. I prefer Fantom/Triton horns and strings.
I particularly like recording on the Motif ES. They kept it the same as the Classic which is VERY simple and easy to learn. I learned without reading the manual. I use Pattern Record for drum loops for music - including RAP BEATS - and I use SONG RECORD to create full songs. I like the fact that it will record in 16 tracks and you can record the arpeggios to each track.
The polyphony is much better than the Classic and the MO series - 128 notes. This does not pose to be a problem for playing live, but will become an issue when recording on the CLASSIC or MO keyboards. I have not had a problem on the ES, but on my Classic or MO6 I found that they would cut out the notes when too many notes were played at the same time.
It is built nice and strong.
Sampling is a BIG upgrade - from 4MB to 64MB. Like the Classic (unlike the MO), you can sample sounds, songs or record instruments/vocals directly to the Motif and they will save as a .WAV file. Just plug in to the Audio in L or R and press the Sampling button.
This is my favorite board. I just recently purchased the newer XF, but have no intentions of selling my ES.
In case you are wondering what I use as a comparison, I own aYamaha Classic 6, MO6, ES6, XF7, Korg X50 (triton engine), Roland RD700, Hammond CV and M3 with two Leslie 25s and a Roland Fantom FA-7.
