TransAcoustic™

Digital was never
more natural

An acoustic piano with volume control, or a digital piano with strings? Yamaha's latest development stretches the imagination and opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

The TransAcoustic™ Piano introduces a new way for piano players to emotionally connect with their instrument. The touch of the keys, the embodiment of sound, the resonance of strings; TransAcoustic Technology enhances the playing experience by using all elements of the acoustic piano to augment and amplify non-acoustic sounds. This means that any sound can be delivered through this naturally resonant piano.

Advantages

Real acoustic piano

Real acoustic pianoMost importantly, a TransAcoustic™ piano is a wonderfully crafted acoustic piano produced in-house through Yamaha's vertically integrated manufacturing process. This guarantees high-level playability, long lasting durability and a beautiful sound. When the hammers strike the strings, vibrations travel through the solid-wood soundboard creating a vibrant tone that will stimulate the senses.

Play piano at any volume

Play piano at any volumeThere are times when the full sound of an acoustic piano may not be appreciated by your family or neighbors. For these situations, simply activate the TransAcoustic™ function and the hammers will no longer strike the strings. Non-contact sensors under each individual key detect your keystroke depth, velocity and timing and send this information to the tone generator. Just adjust the volume and hear the digital sound of your piano performance coming from the entire instrument.

Enjoy different sounds

Enjoy different soundsThe TransAcoustic™ piano offers 19 pre-installed sounds, allowing you to select a voice that perfectly matches your music. Select from the award-winning Yamaha CFX Concert Grand, or from a number of electric pianos, organs, strings and much more! Additionally, you can connect any external sound source to be played back through the entire instrument.

No external speakers needed

No external speakers neededWith Yamaha's TransAcoustic™ technology there's no need to connect external loudspeakers. At its most basic level, TransAcoustic technology turns the piano into a 'loudspeaker' and the soundboard is working as the membrane for that loudspeaker. There's no need to purchase extra speakers and cables. The piano is ready for you to play as soon as it's delivered into your home.

3D Sound Projection

3D Sound ProjectionSounds played through speakers can often sound one directional as they are coming from a single source point. In contrast, the Yamaha TransAcoustic™ system uses all acoustic elements of the piano to generate a larger and more natural omni-present sound. This technology makes the entire instrument a resonator, producing a rich and complex tone.

Natural string resonance

Natural string resonanceThe TransAcoustic™ technology transmits the digital sound directly to the piano soundboard and makes the piano itself behave like a loudspeaker. The sound you hear has the natural tonal characteristics of the soundboard. The vibration of the soundboard is also transmitted to the piano strings and creates the same natural string resonance as when you play an acoustic piano. With the soundboard producing a rich tone and the strings a natural resonance effect, instrument voices sound better than ever. Digital was never more natural.

Combine acoustic and digital sound

Combine acoustic and digital soundPerhaps the most scintillating sounds are generated when you combine the acoustic and digital properties of the instrument - gentle orchestral strings under a natural piano, for example. You can also combine the CFX concert grand piano sample with the piano's own acoustic sound to give it more power and depth. Can you imagine the sound and presence of a 9' Concert Grand emanating from the footprint of a 48" upright?

Play-along to music

Play-along to musicAnother way to enjoy TransAcoustic™ technology is to play the piano accompanied by pre-recorded tracks played through the soundboard. Because the instrument is a real, fully strung and resonant piano, the natural sympathetic vibrations of the soundboard, case and more significantly strings add a completely new dimension to performance. The sampled sounds come to life with a brilliant realism no other instrument can match. You can use the USB port to play back .WAV files or use the AUX-IN jack to connect an external music player.

Silent Piano SH included

Silent Piano SH includedThe TransAcoustic™ Piano features Yamaha's renowned SILENT Piano™ SH technology, so practice sessions can also be conducted with headphones. The binaural sampled CFX concert grand piano sample uses a dummy head recording technique to capture the sound from the player's natural listening position. This offers the perfect environment to play without being disturbed or disturbing others. For all SILENT Piano benefits check our SILENT Piano™ web page.

How does it work?

thumbOn TransAcoustic™ Upright pianos, activate TransAcoustic™ mode by depressing the center pedal and sliding it to the left. This brings a hammer stop rail into place and prevents the hammers from striking the strings. On TransAcoustic™ Grand Pianos the hammer stop rail is engaged by using a motorized system.

thumbA non-contact continuous optical sensor system is used to register the depth and velocity at which keys are depressed. Along with the key sensors, grey-scale shutters are installed under each of the 88 keys. A grey-scale shutter is a small, thin plate whose optical transmission increases towards its bottom while an LED light beam is constantly radiated inside a key sensor. When a piano key is depressed, a grey-scale shutter blocks that light, with the amount of light blocked increasing in proportion to the depth of the keystroke. Based on the amount and traveling speed of the blocked light, the sensor registers keystroke depth and velocity as well as the timing at which muting should occur.

thumbThe registered information is then transmitted to the instrument's tone generator. Using the control unit you can select your sound and volume.

thumbThe tone generator sends audio that is optimized for the TransAcoustic™ system to the instrument's transducers. The transducers then output the signal through the proprietary linkage system and the coils excite the soundboard causing it to vibrate. The result is a full-range, digitally generated sound that is acoustically amplified and enhanced. The sound energy traveling through the soundboard is also transferred to the bridge, activating the strings and creating natural string resonance.

Technology

  • Doesn't Interfere with Soundboard

Doesn't Interfere with Soundboard Each transducer contains a coil and a permanent magnet. On upright TransAcoustic™ pianos, the comparatively light coil section is affixed to the soundboard, and the heavier permanent magnet is attached to a side board. Since the transducers themselves do not press against or exert any weight on the soundboard, the soundboard can vibrate and resonate freely, ensuring no adverse effect on the acoustic piano tone.

  • Yamaha Quality Sound

Yamaha Quality Sound Because the tonal traits of acoustic pianos vary with size and shape, TransAcoustic™ pianos are digitally optimized to deliver the same quality sound regardless of individual piano characteristics.

  • Long Lasting Sound Quality

Long Lasting Sound Quality Yamaha has developed a patented technology that separates the transducers from the soundboard using a proprietary link mechanism to offset any future changes in the soundboard's shape.
