The sound bar uses 16 array speakers controlled by Yamaha's YSP technology plus two powerful 2 1/2” (6.5 cm) woofer units in a large cabinet to deliver excellent sound quality with clearly positioned dialogue and superb surround effects. An aluminum body dampens unwanted vibrations. The result is an expansive sound field that will thrill you with its three-dimensional properties and outstanding imaging.
The subwoofer has a large 6 1/2” (16 cm) driver and uses Yamaha's exclusive Advanced YST technology to produce clear, powerful bass. The circuit board has an ideal grounding pattern that ensures stable current supply. The Linear Port improves sound dispersion and is designed to minimize unnecessary noise. Yamaha’s ultra-sophisticated CINEMA DSP technology creates thrillingly realistic soundscapes in any room. You can select 10 different programs, including three "Movie," three "Music" and four "Entertainment" programs.
The YSP-3300 achieves true surround sound by directing sound beams off walls to reach the listener from various angles. The main mode is 5 BeamPlus2 for 7-channel sources. In addition, there are a wide variety of other listening modes. You can select Stereo + 3 BeamPlus2, 5 Beam, Stereo + 3 Beam, 3 Beam, Stereo, Target and My Surround.
This Yamaha exclusive feature ensures optimum multichannel sound reproduction with accurate image location. By monitoring and analyzing the sound with the microphone included with the YSP-3300, IntelliBeam automatically sets the best beam angles, while optimizing the level and frequency response of each beam. This makes initial setup both extremely simple and acoustically perfect.
Four HDMI inputs mean you can connect four high quality digital sources, each with just a single cable. The inputs support 4K pass-through, which allows the transmission of next-generation super high-resolution images and the transmission of 3D video.
When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. This function restores what was lost, so your music always sounds the way it should.
This welcome feature, made possible by Yamaha-developed technology, maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. It can be switched on and off.
Only 3 3/8” (86 mm) high, the YSP-3300 can easily be placed in front of your TV without blocking the screen. The height can be adjusted in two levels by adding included spacers. It is also wall mountable with optional brackets.
The top surface of the sound bar is made of rigid aluminum with an elegant, brushed-metal finish, for a look that is stylish and imparts a strong feel of luxury. The sides have a mirror finish that harmonizes beautifully with flat-panel TVs.
This subwoofer eliminates the need to connect cables, so setup is faster and easier. It can be used in either a horizontal or a vertical position, providing additional flexibility. This is a convenient subwoofer that delivers powerful, high-quality bass sound.
When connected to a CEC-compatible TV, the YSP-3300 will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote unit to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components.
Even if the YSP-3300 blocks the TV’s remote control signal, the TV Remote Repeater on the rear transmits the signal to the TV so operation is not affected.
You can store three groups of settings for quick recall. Settings include playback mode, CINEMA DSP mode and IntelliBeam measurement results.
When enabled, the display turns off and the unit enters a standby mode under certain conditions, such as when a signal is not received for 30 minutes.

UniVolume™ is a Yamaha-developed technology that maintains a consistent volume level between different channels, programs, commercials and input sources. For instance, when watching TV while using UniVolume™, the volume of commercials will not be louder than the program being viewed. The same is true when switching sources to watch a DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ movie or to listen to music on a CD. This is particularly helpful for late night watching and listening when spikes in volume can disturb others in the house or apartment building.
This unit creates a sound field by reflecting sound beams on the walls of your listening room and by broadening the cohesion of all the channels. Just as you would arrange the speaker position of other audio systems, you need to set the beam angle to enjoy the best possible sound from this unit. This unit employs the beam optimization and sound optimization features with the aid of the supplied IntelliBeam microphone, allowing you to avoid troublesome listening-based setup and achieving highly accurate sound adjustments that best match your listening environment. We call these two features “IntelliBeam” generically.
Advanced Yamaha Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.
The primary advantage of the YSP Series is that simply placing a unit in the front of a room provides true surround sound, which you hear from the front and rear and also the left and right. Its key technologies are the production of sound beams via the control of multiple built-in speakers, and IntelliBeam, which automatically sets the optimum sound field for the size and shape of the room. Thanks to these two technologies, the YSP Series can reproduce 7.1-channel surround sound that is natural with an expansive feeling, qualities that cannot be achieved by virtual surround systems.
The front surface of a YSP unit features a number of compact beam speakers* installed in orderly rows. Control of each of these speakers on a time axis by individual amps creates five sound beams. Bouncing these sound beams off walls creates a surround environment.

Superimposing sound waves from the compact speakers installed in a row and adjusting their direction by delay control causes the axes of the sound waves to converge in a specified direction.
Sound produced from the speakers is transmitted radially from the sound source, like an expanding ripple (Fig. 1).
The sound waves from two speakers are superimposed, creating interference (Fig. 2).
If the number of speakers in adjoining locations is increased, the sound waves are superimposed even more, so the sound is transmitted as a single strong wave. This is a sound beam (Fig. 3).
By using a processor (dedicated Yamaha LSI) to control the times when each speaker produces sound, the direction of the sound beams can be controlled (Fig. 4).
Controlling the directions of the beams to bounce them off the walls enables the sound to come from five directions: front left and right, rear left and right, and center. In addition to the five beams, the YSP-4300/3300 create two phantom sound sources to deliver full 7.1-channel surround sound.
When the microphone is placed at the listening position, it searches for the places suitable for reflecting the beams while it checks the size and shape of the room and the quality of the wall material, in order to automatically adjust the beam angle, the volume and the sound quality. This makes it easy to achieve the best surround sound environment.
YSP models achieve real multi-channel surround by, not virtually but actually, bouncing sound beams off walls. This provides three major benefits.
YSP models naturally expand the sound radiated onto the walls, producing surround sound without the unnatural feeling of sound linkages between the channels.
YSP models provide ideal family listening, because the listening area is wider than with conventional virtual surround sound.
Ordinary virtual surround systems often sound different to different people because the surround sound is created artificially. This causes some people to become tired of listening after a certain amount of time. With YSP models, sound bounced off walls actually comes from behind the listeners, which means there is little difference in its effect between individuals, and people are unlikely to experience listening fatigue, even after long periods.

Never thought buying the YSP would bring me closer to the neighbors. My neighbors stopped by last night. It seems my "Lord of the Rings" movie night disturbed their dinner.
I did set up the YSP on auto calibrate for surround effect, but since my room is rectangular in shape with the TV/YSP in one corner. The auto calibrate results weren't all that great. The soundbar does sound fantastic, you get a feeling of depth to the sound. I've tried some 3D surround sound demos from youtube, once with TV speakers and then again with the YSP. The YSP sounds phenomenal. The TV speakers just give you a feeling of left/right channels and then the volume of the channels overall. There's no depth to the sound, the YSP on the other hand gives you a feeling of immersive depth to the sound. You can clearly make out that the sound is coming from different places in a room (in a movie) when a movie is being played. I tried playing Pandora on my TV from the smart hub but in stereo mode I didn't see much of a difference between the YSP and the TV speakers. It did sound good and the sub woofer gives it an extra kick.
Yesterday afternoon I did manually calibrate the different channels for the YSP and got all but one of the 5.1 channels setup. I cannot get the surround right channel right, maybe because its because of the shape of my room and where the couch is placed relative to the wall. I have a corner setup for my living room which is attached to a dining area. The couch is in front of the TV (10 feet away) with a 45 degree angle to the adjacent wall. It doesn't leave much room behind me to reflect sound off. I do have the FR, FL, C, SL channels manually calibrated with the appropriate 'beam angles'. I just used my own ears to figure if I liked what I was hearing. I don't have any definitive way to say if it's the right thing to do. All I did was keep adjusting the beam angles until I could hear the sound coming from the right place.
I don't know how to adjust the 'beam distance' and 'focal length' parameters because I would need to draw out the layout of the room and use geometry to see exactly what it is I'm doing. I'm just too lazy to do that right now. I may do it sometime later in the week when I'm bored and have nothing better to do.
Last night I was playing "LOTR" and maybe a tad bit too loud (as I was reminded by my neighbors ;)), there was a scene where the nazgul flies around Minas Tarith and you could hear the sound originate from the LF speakers and go all the way to the SL speakers. I could have sworn that it felt like the nazgul flew out of my TV and flew behind me on my left side. It was really cool to have that feeling.
I'm going to tinker some more to get some effect for the right surround. I need to still figure out haw to use the 'beam distance' and 'focal length' settings. I may have to use measuring tape and the room layout diagram to know what I'm doing.
For those who have the YSP, congratulations and I hope we enjoy the home theater experience it brings. And for those on the fence, who need a little more convincing, I'd say give this a try. While I cannot say that this is worth $1.5k or $1.8k but for me it was a decision of aesthetics without having to deal with a room littered with speakers. I'll build my dedicated speaker based home theater when I move to my own place, not while I'm renting.

Installed my YSP-3300 to replace a pair of Phase Tech speakers. While not as robust as a surround system, this sound projector blows away my previous AVR/speaker combo. Excellent, accurate sound. Easy to install. MANY inputs allows elimination of AVR. Power is good, not great, but fine for my open 20' x 20' family room. I've been using stereo mode, not surround, due to open rooms, but sound is still excellent.
