The Jamboree culminated on Saturday, April 16 with two Junior Original Concerts, a family concert open to all ages and a showcase event for adults and children over the age of six.

Twenty-seven Yamaha Music Education students, including San Diego’s thirteen-year old Andrew To, played their original compositions in this year’s Jamboree. To represented the Greene Music Education Center, and played his composition “To Be or Not To Be a Pianist” at one of the concerts, all of which were free to the general public.

The Yamaha Music Education System (YMES) is a global network of schools located in more than 40 countries. Students study under Yamaha’s proven instructional methods, using the same textbooks and following the same curriculum, emphasizing that children not merely learn how to play instruments, but also learn how to study music.

More than one million YMES students worldwide are eligible to participate in the Yamaha Junior Original Concert (JOC) program, which gives young musicians a chance to perform their own original compositions in a concert setting. Many of the young artists who performed at the San Diego event are participants in the JOC program.

The weekend also included workshops for students and teachers by three highly regarded names in the music industry. Composer Michael Abels spoke on the Basic Concepts of Arranging for Piano Plus 1; A.J. deGrasse, Director of Junior Original Concert and Grade Examination for Yamaha’s Music Education Division led a workshop on Software Tools for Teachers, and acclaimed author Keith Golay discussed The Relationship of Temperament & Learning Styles to YMES Class Management.
