The 5 member trumpet ensemble from Grand Valley State University recently took home 2nd place in the National Trumpet Competition. The team is coached by Yamaha Artist Richard Stoelzel and is comprised of three juniors and two sophomores Quincy Ream of Grand Rapids, MI; Paul Mueller of Clarkston, MI; Jeff Lewandowski of Livonia, MI; Michael Newton of Gastonia, NC and Robby McCabe of East Granby, CT. The GVSU team was only edged out by 1 vote and placed behind a 13 member ensemble from UCLA also coached by a Yamaha Artist and former Canadian Brass member, Jens Lindemann. "Second place in the country isn't so bad," Stoelzel said. "Most are flagship schools and conservatories. And Grand Valley. That's pretty sweet." Since 2002, GVSU's trumpet studio has produced six solo winners and two ensemble winners.
