Yamaha Continues To Support Nuçi's Space

BUENA PARK, CA (December 27, 2002) — In continuing support for Nuçi's Space, Yamaha Corporation of America recently made a donation of an AW16G Professional Audio Workstation, MSP3 Monitor Speakers and RH5MA Stereo Headphones to the Athens (GA) facility.

The not-for-profit space was formed in memory of 22-year-old musician Nuçi Phillips through the Nuçi Phillips Memorial Foundation (www.nuçi.org) – an organization dedicated to helping young musicians facing struggles with the drive to fame. Struggling with depression for over five years, Phillips committed suicide in November 1996. The Phillips family decided to celebrate their son's life by purchasing a warehouse in downtown Athens and converting it into a state-of-the-art music complex/counseling center called Nuçi's Space.

The center provides a supportive environment to practice, perform, and network. As a fully functioning venue, the Space has hosted a number of bands, from locals playing their first-ever gigs to well-known national acts. Musicians can receive counseling for depression, plus attend support groups and information workshops. Rehearsal areas and performance space are available for use at a nominal fee. Most of the counselors are also musicians who help to provide a better understanding of the pressures and ups and downs of the music industry.

Counselors provide instructions on various topics, from making CDs to coping with the stress of life in a band. Musicians can gather to practice, play and plug into the Athens music scene, with patrons charged a nominal fee. All proceeds from the local gigs are used to fund professional counseling services for musicians and building maintenance.

Yamaha and other individual contributors helped in raising funds to construct the center and furnish it with quality equipment when it opened its doors in September 2000. Yamaha guitars, portable keyboards, and other musical instruments were originally donated to the center.

"I thank Yamaha once again for their generous donation of the recorder it will take our benefit shows in a whole new direction," says Daniel Nettles, Nuçi's Space Technical Coordinator. "The AW16G has already been put to use we have recorded our December show, which will be used for a series of 'Live from Nuçi's Space' compilations this not only helps musicians get exposure, but helps keep our place open."

Nuçi's Space recently celebrated its second birthday with the 25th anniversary homecoming performance of local heroes, the B-52's. The concert raised over $10,000 for Nuçi's Space.
