Yamaha CVP900 Digital Piano Raises The Bar

ANAHEIM, CA (January 30, 2003) — The very best in touch, sound and beauty awaits owners of the Yamaha CVP900 Clavinova Digital Piano being introduced at Winter NAMM 2003. Yamaha's new top-of-the-line "grand-style" Clavinova incorporates a lifelike "Natural Keyboard," an enlarged onboard full-color LCD display, an array of new instrument voices and unbelievable 256-note polyphony.

"This is the most feature-packed instrument ever to bear the Clavinova name, with a touch that is second to none," says Jim Levesque, Electronic Keyboard marketing manager, Piano Division, Yamaha Corporation of America. "It's a true flagship for us, and it's going to be the focal point in the living room of anyone who takes one home."

The innovative 88-key "Natural Keyboard" on the CVP900 is a breakthrough in feel and responsiveness. As in the earlier GH (Graded Hammer effect) keyboards, key weight is graded from heavier in the lower registers to lighter on the higher end, but now in six different steps as opposed to four. A new hammer action lets users feel the hammers as they play, bringing more of the traditional acoustic experience into the digital realm.

Two sets of sensors – one under each key and one under each hammer – detect the damper position and keystrike velocity, providing the same feel and response as a grand pianos keyboard during fast, delicate passages. This new interface is delivered through natural wood keys and three grand-style pedals for a degree of warmth, touch and control that's closer than ever to the real thing.

A new extra-large (640 x 480 dots) full-color LCD display enables smooth, easy operation and quick access to desired features and functions. On-screen music score and lyric functions provide more flexibility for performance, as well as enhanced karaoke fun with family and friends. Users can even customize the screen's "wallpaper" as they are accustomed to doing on their home computers.

The CVP900 is just as remarkable on the inside. Users who don't play the piano will find the traditional Clavinova welcome in the CVP900's employment of the well-known Guide Lamps. The Guide Lamps use Follow Lights software to illuminate the next key to be played in a composition, while beautiful arrangements act as an accompaniment. Users don't have to play along with the recording – the recording literally plays along with them. Whether someone has had 100 lessons or none, everyone in the family can play music the moment the CVP900 is delivered.

In addition to the realistic Piano and XG voices that have become a Yamaha hallmark, this new Clavinova offers more than 800 voices with a variety of new sounds. Ten "Sweet!" voices deliver nuances such as wind and brass instrument vibrato; 17 "Live!" voices are powered by stereo samples of acoustic instruments for a live feel; six "Cool!" voices offer the original detailed sound of electric instruments; and 37 "Natural!" voices use the CVP900's vast memory to assure optimum reproduction of other sounds. The onboard choices also include 26 different drum kits to keep the beat (apart from the Clavinova's built-in metronome), and ten organ flutes with nine footages.

Yamaha's AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) tone generation starts with CD-quality samples of the actual instrument, then filters them during play according to the users touch on the keyboard – tailoring not only the volume but the tonality as well.

Lovers of virtually every musical genre will enjoy the CVP900's new accompaniment styles – 231 in all. Each one features three intros and endings, four variations, four fill-ins and one break. The new Clavinova also delivers the popular Music Finder feature, introduced on the CVP200 Series, which lets users search for suitable styles by song title, genre, keyword, tempo or beat. There are 120 preset selections in the CVP900's onboard songbook, and the built-in floppy disk drive makes the musical selection practically limitless.

Performers and composers can save and edit their own music using four different recording modes through 16 recording channels. The CVP900 features 4MB of internal flash memory (which saves it contents even after the power is switched off) and eight registration memory buttons with a virtually unlimited number of registration banks. A 60 watt x 2 amplification system provides rich sound through two onboard speakers.

This long-awaited CVP model is currently available, and comes in an elegant polished ebony grand-style cabinet that will enhance any décor – an important consideration, given that most Clavinova owners display their instruments in a living room setting as a valued piece of fine furniture.
