For the 2004 Drum Corps International (DCI) season, the DCI board of directors allowed the use of amplification for pit instruments. This was in response to suggestions to help the corps realize the full potential of this important part of their groups, which, on occasion, became drowned out by the brass and battery sections. The introduction of amplification gave the corps caption heads and show designers another opportunity to enhance the overall depth of sound for the groups by enabling all of the subtle nuances of the pit section to be fully heard throughout the largest of stadiums. Of the nine groups who used amplification, seven used Yamaha Pro Audio gear, including the 01V96 digital mixing console, P5000W power amplifier, SM15V 15" main channel speakers and SW-119V 18" subwoofers. The groups using Yamaha Pro Audio gear exclusively include: The Madison Scouts, Cavaliers, Cadets, Crossmen, Spirit of JSU, Santa Clara Vanguard, Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown.
