Yamaha Digital Consoles, Studio Monitors Receive Coveted THX pm3™ Approval

THX Products
BUENA PARK, CA (November 12, 2004) — The Yamaha DM2000V2, DM1000V2 and 02R96V2 are the world's first digital consoles equipped with complete built-in surround monitoring facilities, offering the perfect surround solution when used in combination with the Yamaha MSP10 Studio monitors.

That advantage was recently recognized by the industry, when the product line received THX pm3™ Certification in the areas of "Studio Monitoring Systems" and "Front & Surround Speakers." In addition, three new console Bass Management Presets have also received approval for use in THX pm3 Certified Studios, which are designed to provide dedicated parameters for DVD-Music, DVD-Video and film production.

"Although the DM1000, DM2000, 02R96 and MSP10 Studios were originally designed as production products, they have really become cross-platform and multi-purpose, and can be found in every area of the professional audio industry," states Larry Italia, general manager, Yamaha Commercial Audio. "The THX pm3 certification, along with the recently released Version 2 software upgrades, will enhance the flexibility, performance and functionality of those products, regardless of their application."

Founded in 1983 by filmmaker George Lucas, THX Ltd. provides technologies and performance standards to guarantee the finest picture and sound quality for cinemas, studios, home theaters, DVDs, multimedia products and luxury vehicles. THX Certification is considered a mark of excellence in the entertainment industry, and product manufacturers seeking certification must meet rigorous requirements.

Originally developed to improve the audio quality in theaters, THX technology was created as a result of Lucas's strict sound specifications and personal desire that the quality of the original Star Wars film soundtracks heard in theaters matched those that had been created on the sound stage. Lucasfilms' Tomlinson Holman developed the criteria and engineering for THX, which Lucas named partly after him (Tomlinson Holman's eXperiment) and partly after his 1971 film THX 1138.

The THX pm3 (Professional Multi-Channel Mixing & Monitoring) Studio Certification Program addresses the need for reliable, translatable and superior performance in professional multi-channel mixing and monitoring studios. The standards for these products and facilities focuses on the listening and viewing environment, selection of equipment, layout of the working area and calibration.

Steven P. Martz, Design Engineering Manager of THX, states, "We are very pleased to add Yamaha's digital consoles and studio monitors to the THX pm3 'Approved Equipment List.' Although the DM2000, DM1000 and 02R96 had been designed with full surround monitoring capabilities, the introduction of V2 software allows users to access pm3-compliant parameters by just selecting one of the THX presets."

Yamaha's digital consoles are fully compatible with 3.1, 5.1 and 6.1 surround processing, panning and monitoring requirements. The MSP10 Studio monitors can be found in a number of professional facilities equipped with full surround mixing configurations.

"Our long-term relationship with THX has resulted in the 'THX menu' feature, which is incorporated into V2 software and pm3 criteria," states Tak Shono, Yamaha Corporation (Japan) Commercial Audio Business Unit. "We are looking forward to more of our products being used in professional surround production facilities, and this collaboration with THX will certainly increase the awareness and popularity of accurate, high quality surround sound."
