Odyssey Percussion Theatre Plays Yamaha

BUENA PARK, CA (November 19, 2004) — The newly formed Odyssey Percussion Theatre in Atlanta, GA has announced that it will enter its first year of competition using Yamaha marching and concert percussion products exclusively. More than 30 performers between the ages of 15 and 22 will carry Yamaha snares, bass drums and tube carriers in the group's 2005 show, "The Pulse," culminating in the Winter Guard International (WGI) Finals in April.

"The Atlanta area is really overflowing with young musicians wanting to participate in the indoor percussion activity," says Percussion Manager Troy Wollwage of the Yamaha Band & Orchestral Division. "With so many wonderful high school music programs, not to mention the outstanding college percussion ensembles in this area, Odyssey will be able to have some of the best talent right out of the gate in their first year of existence."

Odyssey offers young men and women quality educational and performance experiences in the percussive arts. Its objective is to develop personal character through challenging physical, mental, and social activities while promoting the values of perseverance, hard work, and responsibility to accomplish team goals.

"We went with Yamaha because in dealing with all of the other instrument possibilities, we decided that Yamaha far surpassed the product quality and customer relations of the other companies that we researched," says Odyssey Percussion Theatre Executive Director Eric Miller.

"All the instruments are very user-friendly, and the quality of Yamaha instruments matches Odyssey's philosophy," he notes, "which is to create the best organization from the ground up, with a positive attitude, great work ethic, dedication, and the best equipment and instruction that anyone can get."

Its first-year program, "The Pulse," is based on the observation by noted West African drummer Babatunde Olatunji: "Rhythm is the soul of life. The whole universe revolves in rhythm. Everything and every human action revolves in rhythm."

Winter Guard is a competitive program that combines music, movement and props into a theatrical production performed in a gymnasium. Odyssey will be competing across the country against other indoor percussion organizations on the World Class level, and will wrap up its first season at the WGI Finals competition in Dayton, Ohio in April 2005. Odyssey hopes to continue to grow in the coming years and to expand its educational benefits to other areas of music and performance.

"The staff has started this organization off on the right foot," states Wollwage. "They knew that in order to truly build a self-sustaining, non-profit organization, they needed a partner to help them. Yamaha recognized the long-term value in what the staff is building in Georgia, and it just made sense to get involved in any way that we could."
