Opera San José Names Yamaha Its Official Piano

San Jose Opera
SAN JOSE, CA (January 07, 2005) — Opera San José began its 21st anniversary season with the culmination of a long-held dream – a new performance home in a state-of-the-art theater acoustically designed for opera.

On opening night this past September, Opera San José (OSJ) hosted three simultaneous inaugural galas to herald its debut at the magnificently restored California Theatre, a 1927 vaudeville and film house which had been closed for three decades. Yamaha is the official piano of OSJ, and provided a Yamaha Disklavier® DCII for the Black Tie fundraising event at the San José Marriott Hotel, across from the new California Theatre.

"The opening of the California Theatre is the hottest thing in downtown San José," says Glen Wong, OSJ's corporate relations manager. "It's been years in the making, and Yamaha played a big part in this opening. We chose Yamaha to be OSJ's official piano because of its ongoing relationship with San José State University – our company originated there, in the Music Department – and because of its reputation in the South Bay area.

"Yamaha is a big supporter of the arts community and is renowned for quality instruments," continues Wong, adding that a Yamaha C7 conservatory grand piano and a U1 and U3 upright piano are currently in use year round for rehearsals, recitals, training, coaching, donor events and receptions.

Formed in 1988, OSJ is one of the premier regional opera companies in the U.S., with a well-deserved reputation for showcasing America's finest young professional singers. Under General Director Irene Dalis, the company identifies promising young artists and awards them annual contracts to perform leading roles in main stage productions and to participate in educational activities: all of these gifted artists are groomed for successful international operatic careers. Since its inception, OSJ has presented 84 opera productions, including four world premieres among its repertoire of 47 titles. In the 2003 – 2004 season, OSJ reached 72,507 people with all its offerings.

The 1,100-seat auditorium at the California Theatre, slightly smaller than England's Glyndebourne and Venice's historic Teatro la Fenice, joins the select ranks of the world's most intimate opera houses. OSJ will present four main stage productions at the acoustically perfect theatre during the 2004 – 2005 Season: The Marriage of Figaro (September 18 – October 3), Tosca (November 20 – December 5), Carmen (February 5 – 20), and The Flying Dutchman (April 9 – 24). OSJ also offers numerous educational programs in schools and throughout the community, including previews, lectures and "Introduction to Opera" talks for all main stage productions.
