Yamaha Z-Series Saxophone and Trumpet Reviewed by Downbeat

Z Trumpet
Yamaha YTR-8310Z
The December 2003 and February 2005 issues of Downbeat magazine devoted some of their space in the Toolshed section to reviewing Yamaha's Z-series line of band instruments, more specifically, the YTR-8310Z (trumpet) and YAS-82Z (alto saxophone). While the original YTR-6310Z trumpet designed by Bobby Shew was considered a "perfect" horn by Bobby, it was not until Bob Malone (Yamaha Custom Shop Designer) approached Bobby about making some changes to the horn which eventually lead to a newly designed Z-series line. These new changes were a welcomed change for the critics of Downbeat magazine.

Writer Mike Pavlik shared his thought on the YTR-8310Z, "I've played the horn in a big band, small ensemble settings, in the classroom and at a church gig. Nothing gets in the way. All registers are free-blowing, and the sound is warm, but cutting when the trumpet needs to be heard over the top."

Similar words of praise where given by Ed Enright after testing the YAS-82Z on many gigs he had used the horn on, "It played with plenty of pop and helped me achieve a heavier, more substantial tone than I usually get on tenor. Response was even and balanced up and down the horn, and altissimo notes spoke with ease."
