Yamaha Once Again Chosen As Official Piano of NRO

BRECKENRIDGE, CO (August 12, 2005) — Since 1960, the National Repertory Orchestra (NRO) in Breckenridge, Colo. has been a premier training ground and career springboard for thousands of the finest young classical musicians. Alumni of the intensive eight-week summer residency for 18 to 28 year olds play in virtually every major and regional orchestra in the U.S. and throughout the world. For 28 years, Yamaha artist and NRO musical director Carl Topilow has evaluated applicants. This year, 86 musicians from a pool of more than 800 were chosen. Winter auditions took place in 18 U.S. cities, including New York City at Yamaha Artist Services, Inc.

Yamaha has been the official piano of the NRO for several years, with pianos placed by Wells Music in Denver. A Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand was onstage through August 7; a Yamaha C7 conservatory grand is also used for performances and rehearsals, and a Yamaha U1 upright resides in the orchestral pianist’s home for the summer.

NRO Executive Director Terese Kaptur owns a Yamaha upright and says, “I have always appreciated the tone, clarity and brilliance of Yamaha pianos. I walk around the concert hall during NRO performances and the CFIIIS sounds fabulous. It speaks very well in the hall, doesn’t lose sound in certain registers as some pianos do, and is very consistent.”

The rigorous NRO program offers an unrivaled experience for aspiring musicians, including solo and ensemble performance, individual coaching, master classes and career development instruction under Topilow, top conductors and alumni.

“There’s nowhere else where young people play this much repertoire in such a short time,” says Topilow. “It’s a very special opportunity; once they do NRO, they can do anything.”

“We work hard to keep the program valid and vibrant,” he continues. “We inspire young musicians to be proactive, to examine what possibilities exist to draw listeners into the concert experience. We enhance the listener’s experience through explanation of the music through musical examples, listening guides and when appropriate, PowerPoint presentations that complement the music.” Topilow continues by saying, “young musicians need three things to succeed: attitude, attitude, attitude.”

Twenty-four performances comprising the equivalent of a full symphony season are being presented this summer at the beautiful 750-seat amphitheater at Riverwalk Center in the heart of downtown Breckenridge and other locations. A full schedule and more information can be found at www.nromusic.com.
