Yamaha Keeps the Beat at U of MD Percussion Workshop

BUENA PARK, CA (October 28, 2005) — Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, sponsored two weeks of percussion activities this summer at the University of Maryland at College Park: The University of Maryland Summer Percussion Workshop for high school- and college-age percussionists, and the Rebecca Kite Marimba Performance Class for college-age and professional percussionists.

The two weeks were filled with clinics, performances, master classes, workshops and concerts. More than 45 students, some from as far away as Nebraska, attended these events.

In the percussion workshop, students attended clinics presented by professional artists and University of Maryland faculty members John Tafoya, Anthony Ames and Rebecca Kite.

Marimba students in Kite’s class focused on developing their own performance skills and on learning about the music and marimba sound of Keiko Abe. A Yamaha clinician, Kite has been performing as a marimba soloist for more than 20 years, appearing in concerts and clinics across the United States and in Europe, Japan and Latin America. She currently teaches at the School of Music at the University of Maryland at College Park. Kite has released two solo marimba recordings, Across Time (1993) and Prism (1996), and her method books include Reading Mallet Percussion Music and Anthology of Lute and Guitar Music for Marimba.

“Yamaha has been pitching in to help with this camp now for a number of years,” says Troy Wollwage, Marketing Manager, Percussion. “It is important that early on in their education, mallet keyboard students get an opportunity to see what it takes to become better at their craft. Yamaha plays a small part in the process, by providing top-of-the-line concert marimbas and mallets for them to use throughout this two-week session, and we value our involvement in this educational program.”
