Clavinova CLP-200 Series Launched

BUENA PARK, Calif. — The new Yamaha CLP-220 Series Clavinovas are innovative digital pianos that elegantly capture the sound of a grand piano in all of its natural grandeur and beauty, while offering a range of interactive options for users.

While the entry level CLP-220 features Graded Hammer Effect (GH) technology, all other models incorporate the ground-breaking Graded Hammer Effect 3 (GH3), to recreate the texture and quality of a grand piano. Heavy in the lower end and light in the upper keys, this GH3 technology provides the characteristic weight balance between key and hammer, and replicates the weight gradations of the keys found in an acoustic grand. The top model CLP-280 offers the added enhancement of a Natural Wood Keyboard made with real-wood white keys. In addition, techniques that were previously only possible on a grand piano – such as playing the same note repeatedly with perfect articulation – can now be performed on the Clavinova, thanks to two new velocity sensors.

“Not only does each CLP-200 model feel and sound like a grand piano, it also functions like one,” notes Jim Levesque, Electronic Keyboard Marketing Manager, Yamaha Corporation of America, Piano Division. “With its natural, balanced weight, key mass and authentic wood touch and feel, the CLP-200 Series has a playability and expressiveness that is unlike any other electronic instrument.”

Like the higher-end models in the CVP-300 Series, the CLP-280/270 models feature iAFC (Instrumental Active Field Control), a sophisticated technology that examines and adjusts to room acoustics, creating a richer and more spacious sonic environment. Using built-in microphones, iAFC picks up sound and combines it with the Clavinova’s internal sound through the rear speakers, making automatic adjustments in real time to enhance performances and match the acoustic characteristics of the room.

The heart of the Clavinova’s voices lies in the AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) tone generation technology, which provides instrumental sounds of amazing realism and depth. The piano voices on the CLP-280/270/240, in particular, benefit from the new Dynamic Stereo Sampling (DSS) system, which features recordings of a wide range of dynamics – from loud to soft – to fully capture the varying nuances in timbre and tone of a grand piano.

In addition, the CLP-280/270/240 offer Key-Off and Stereo Sustain samples, which reconstruct the delicate sound of keys being released and the resonances of the strings and soundboard that would occur from pressing the damper pedal on a grand.

The CLP-280/270 models also encompass a new three-way system for a richer, better-defined midrange. A new two-way speaker system on the CLP-240 produces an exceptionally well-balanced, spacious sound that perfectly suits the luscious texture of the instrument’s sounds. Furthermore, String Resonance samples are offered to provide the complex qualities that make an acoustic grand piano sound so rich and full.

The new Clavinovas also include a selection of sample musical instrument sounds and an enlarged memory, along with USB connectivity. The CLP-280/270/240 are the first Clavinovas to feature both USB TO HOST and TO DEVICE terminals. This means users can connect to a computer (TO HOST) and select from the vast possibilities in computer music, as well as hook up to their favorite USB storage device for storing valuable song data – all at the same time.

Designed to match any décor, the CLP-280 is offered in five different finishes: Polished Ebony, Polished Mahogany, Dark Rosewood, Mahogany and Cherry, while the other CLP-270/240/230/220 models are offered in three finishes: Dark Rosewood, Mahogany or Cherry.

Music clips are available on the CLP-280/270/240 models, for securing music books and scores and come with a folding music rest as well as a headphone hanger.
