Yamaha, Sibelius and Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation Team up to Support Music Education on Dr. Phil

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Dr. Phil show called on the assistance of Yamaha Corporation of America, Sibelius USA and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, three organizations with a common mission in support of music education, to participate in a segment of Dr. Phil that aired on Friday, April 14th. The theme of the segment was honoring those who place music at the heart of helping foster and under exposed children.

Yamaha instruments provided by both Yamaha and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation included saxophones, drum pads, headphones, triangles, trombones, guitars, keyboards, flutes and trumpets valued at over $65,000. Sibelius USA donated over $25,000 of music notation software to help with the development of students' composition skills.

The segment focused on two specific situations where music and the arts are major factors in the lives of foster children.

The Urban Entertainment Institute (UEI), located in south Los Angeles and founded by Fred Martin, its president, is an after-school arts program offering music, vocal, dance and art lessons, as well as sound recording training. Many of the children who attend the program are educated at inner city schools with minimal or no music programs; many are musically gifted children living in single-parent homes; and some are part of the foster care system and cannot afford to pursue their talents. This program is unique in that it is free for any child to participate. Dr. Phil began the segment with Martin by presenting him with a Yamaha guitar. UEI is the recipient of most of the products provided.

A single mom from New Jersey was also honored for her years of supporting difficult to place foster children, many with developmental disabilities. "Elaine" has dedicated her life to provide these children with unconditional love and support, and currently has over 50 children in her care. Yamaha and Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation provided her with keyboards, flutes and guitars.

"I've often said when kids get to be 12, 13, 14 years old, they're going to join something, and I'd a whole lot rather it be a choir or a band than a gang," says Dr. Phil.

The Dr. Phil Foundation, committed to supporting organizations and programs that build awareness and offer solutions to address the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of children and families, was created by Dr. Phillip C. McGraw, psychologist, best-selling author, and host of the critically acclaimed daytime television series. The Foundation seeks support from individuals and corporations to aid programs in areas such as education, music and the arts, children's health and disaster relief.
