Yamaha Music School Grad Makes Appearance on Oprah

BUENA PARK, Calif. — "A miracle prodigy" exclaims Oprah, who says she's never seen anything like her. Yamaha Music School graduate, Jennifer Lin, was chosen as one of four young people to appear on the April 25 segment of Oprah entitled "Little Geniuses." Although she is only 16, her exquisite piano playing is far beyond her years. In the midst of the on-camera interview, and after wowing the audience with a performance of Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 6, Jennifer created an original composition on the spot by using fives notes selected at random by Oprah.

"Being on Oprah was a huge surprise for me," says Lin. "I would have never expected this to happen to me. But, it was a wonderful experience, despite the early hours. It was honestly cool to be in a studio, to wear a microphone and get made up, and of course, to perform for Oprah and her audience."

Lin, an accomplished pianist and composer, graduated from the Yamaha Music Education System (YMES) where she was a student since age four, and has become well-known in Yamaha circles as one of the most outstanding students and brightest stars that has hailed from the Junior Original Concert (JOC) program. Her emergence into wider fame came when she addressed the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Monterey, Calif. followed by a nod from ABC World News Tonight where she was named "Person of the Week" in 2004 and called "an exciting young talent who wants to touch the world" by the late Peter Jennings.

"Jennifer Lin is a talented, hard working, multifaceted young musician," says Mike Morrell, marketing and planning manager, Yamaha Music Education Division, Yamaha Corporation of America. "She was born with a natural ability, but we also believe that the Yamaha Music Education System method worked to draw out her talent and to cultivate her creative side, which we now see blossoming in her ability as a performer, improviser, and composer."

Lin lives with her family in Alhambra, Calif. where she is a high school junior and has studied at the A1 Yamaha Music School in Monterey Park, Calif. Taking her relationship with Yamaha very seriously, she frequently performs in events related to the JOC, and most recently performed at the grand opening ceremonies of the Yamaha Music School Boston on the evening prior to taping Oprah.
