The scholarship, funded by Yamaha, honors legendary jazz vibraphonist Terry Gibbs. Gibbs' career began at the age of 12 upon winning the Major Bowes Amateur Hour Contest, and has spanned six decades. He performed for many years as a drummer and percussionist until his affinity for bebop motivated him to return to the vibes and subsequently become recognized as one of the best ever to grace the genre of bop. After World War II, Gibbs toured with Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Louie Bellson, Benny Goodman and formed his own band for the Mel Torme television show. He led his own bands in the 50s, and in 1957 formed the critically acclaimed big band "The Dream Band."

Throughout his career, Gibbs has enjoyed worldwide acclaim playing with jazz luminaries Buddy DeFranco, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Horace Silver, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tito Puente. He is a Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame member, has won three major jazz polls and has 65 albums and more than 300 compositions to his credit.

"This scholarship is in honor of the indelible mark Gibbs has left on the world of vibes," said PAS Executive Director Michael Kenyon. "We are delighted to partner with Yamaha in creating this living legacy and helping to support the education of talented young vibraphonists."

The scholarship is administered by PAS. The application deadline for this year is June 15. Applications are available online here.
