Jazz Sensation Taylor Eigsti Records New CD on Yamaha C7

BUENA PARK, Calif. — One of the brightest new stars of jazz, Yamaha artist Taylor Eigsti chose a C7 conservatory grand piano to record his latest CD and debut on Concord Records, Lucky to Be Me. The expansive album is a combination of original songs, different arrangements of standards and songs from more unexpected genres, such as a Bjork song, a piece by Mussourgsky and the theme to The Sopranos.

"I tried to approach the material by giving songs a different, new spin through re-harmonizations and stylistic changes, while keeping the vibe and the original intent of what the song was about," comments Eigsti.

Playing piano since age four, the now 21-year-old pianist and composer always uses a C7 in the recording studio because he appreciates its reliability and exceptional quality.

"I think the C7 is the most consistently good piano I have ever played," says Eigsti. "One of the great things about Yamaha is how they can create something that sounds and feels great, but then reproduce it so every time you play on that model, it will basically be the same exact piano, which is so helpful!"

Eigsti enjoys the consistency between the individual notes that gives the C7 a smooth touch and lets the pianist rely on the action to provide the right amount of give and release. He also credits the "tremendous clarity" of the piano's bass, as well as a high register that is "just bright enough to ring out above anything."

"One of the things I like to do is have certain lines and shapes of phrases going upwards and increasing in dynamics, and the C7 allows me to do that easily, while providing me with the right touch to be able to immediately get soft," observes Eigsti. "Ultimately, I feel like I have the most control over what I play when I am playing on it."

Lucky to Be Me was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York and features "some of the best musicians on the planet" according to Eigsti, including: bassists Christian McBride and James Genus, drummers Lewis Nash and Billy Kilson and guitarist Julian Lage. The CD is in stores now.
