Nurturing Talent: Yamaha Drums Sets It Up for Next Generation Festival

MONTEREY, Calif. — Yamaha Drums supplied six drum kits to young artists who appeared at the 2nd Annual Next Generation Festival, a showcase for some of the best jazz students in the country.

"Yamaha has long supported educational efforts and the Next Generation Festival provides a great forum for young players to strut their stuff," said David Jewell, marketing manager, Yamaha Drums. "It's important to nurture the upcoming generation of players to ensure that jazz has a vital future."

Participants in the April festival attend middle schools, high schools and colleges across the country. Winners of the various competitions earned a spot to perform at the 49th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, which will be held September 15-17 and include the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy (Beaverton, Ore.), Berkeley High School Sextet (Berkeley, Calif.), Folsom High School (Folsom, Calif.) and the University of North Florida Big Band (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Students also auditioned for the MJF Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Monterey Jazz Festival's international touring ensemble featuring the nation's best high school jazz musicians. The band will tour New York and Europe in the summer and perform with Kurt Elling at the Monterey Jazz Festival.

"The Monterey Jazz Festival has been very fortunate to have the support of Yamaha Drums," David Murray, production coordinator, Monterey Jazz Festival. "Not only do they supply drums, but also personal assistance from technicians, and never hesitate to help us, no matter how unusual the request. Yamaha Drums has been a major part of our success – we consider them to be a part of our Monterey Jazz Festival family, not just a supplier of equipment."
