DCI Champions Play Yamaha

BUENA PARK, CA (August 12, 2006) - Marching entirely with Yamaha brass and percussion, The Cavaliers (of Rosemont, Ill.) won the 2006 Drum Corps International (DCI) Division I World Championships. Affectionately known as the "Green Machine," the Cavaliers received its 7th DCI title with a score of 97.200 for their show, "MACHINE."

The Cavaliers also received the High Brass, Best Visual Performance, Best Overall General Effect and Spirit of Disney Awards, which honors imagination and creativity. The Cavaliers are the first champions to simultaneously obtain the Spirit of Disney distinction.

Other corps who play Yamaha also finished in the elite 12. The Bluecoats placed 4th, the highest in their corps history. David Glasgow, executive director of the Bluecoats, received this year's Director of the Year Award, also known as the Dr. Baggs Leadership Award.

Last year's champions, The Cadets, finished 5th, followed by Santa Clara Vanguard in 6th. The Madison Scouts, 9th place, and Spirit from JSU, 12th place, rounded out the top 12.

In addition, Impulse Drum & Bugle Corps, an all-Yamaha corps, received the gold medal in Division III competition and received 8th place overall in the Division II and III finals. Impulse had a final score of 84.975 and received the High Percussion and Spirit of Disney Awards for their division.

Corps that play Yamaha have won 14 championships in 22 years, 11 out of 22 High Percussion Awards, and 4 out of 7 High Brass Awards. The 34th annual competition for the world's top drum and bugle corps took place over three days at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis. Approximately 22,000 fans watched the show each day. ESPN 2 will air performances from the DCI finals on Sept. 5. Next year, the championships will be held at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif.
