Stefon Harris, Jeff Coffin Hold Clinics, Concert at Yamaha Artist Services, Inc.
NEW YORK, N.Y. More than 100 local musicians and students were inspired as Yamaha artists offered their insights at clinics and performed in concert at this year's Day of Jazz. Saxophonist Jeff Coffin, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, electric violinist Christian Howes and trumpet artist Jeremy Pelt were at this special event, which took place on September 10 at Yamaha Artist Services, Inc. in New York City.
Dedicated to the art of jazz, the day-long event also offered participants the opportunity to tour the Band & Orchestral Atelier and take part in hands-on instrument testing.
"Day of Jazz focused on the joy and process of making music, not just instruments," states Yamaha Band and Orchestral Division's Winds Marketing Manager Kurt Witt. "It's extremely gratifying to know that our clinics were able to provide participants with real world instruction from working professional musicians and offer lessons that go beyond the classroom."
Since 1997, saxophonist, composer and Grammy-winning member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, Jeff Coffin has traveled the world with the Flecktones and performed with such artists as Baaba Maal, McCoy Tyner, The Dave Matthews Band, Umphrey's McGee, Savion Glover, Branford Marsalis and various others. His acclaimed CD BLOOM was released in 2005.
Lauded vibraphonist Stefon Harris' passionate artistry, energetic stage presence and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him into the forefront of the current jazz scene. Harris is a recipient of the prestigious Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center and earned back-to-back-to-back Grammy nominations. His noted albums include The Grand Unification Theory (2003), Kindred (2001) and Black Action Figure (1999).
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt arrived in New York in 1998 after graduating from Berklee College of Music. He received his first professional jazz gig with the Mingus Big Band, and has played with many jazz luminaries, such as Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Ravi Coltrane, Nancy Wilson, The Skatalites and Cedar Walton. Pelt has also been featured in a variety of different bands, including the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Big Band. Currently he is member of the Lewis Nash Septet, Mingus Big Band and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes.
Christian Howes has already made an indelible mark and is poised to be a path-finding figure on the contemporary violin. Winning recognition from artists and critics alike, Howes has performed and/or recorded with such prominent artists as Greg Osby, Randy Brecker, James Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Akua Dixon's Quartette Indigo, Billy Hart, D.D. Jackson, David Murray, Steve Turre's Sextet with Strings, Jane Monheit, Dr. John, Frank Vignola and Lenny White, among others.
