Celebration of Edvard Grieg's Centennial Year

BUENA PARK, Calif. — Pianist and lecturer Joseph Smith will present a special recital and lecture titled "Seeking the Hidden Harmonies in Folksong," at Yamaha Artist Services' Piano Salon on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. The program will compare and contrast the works of composers Grieg, Grainger and Bartok, in celebration of Edvard Grieg's centennial year. The concert event is sponsored by the Norwegian Consulate General in New York and the Edvard Grieg Society of New York.

The program will include: Grieg: From Op. 66 and Op. 72 Folksong Selections; Grainger: Irish Tune from County Derry, Jutish Medley (on Danish folksongs); and Bartok: Fifteen Hungarian Peasant Songs, Evening in Transylvania.

Hailed an "eloquent" pianist by The New York Times, Joseph Smith is an accomplished performer, lecturer and writer. A successful recording artist, Smith has released three CDs to date, including Familiar Melodies (Brioso 126), Piano Waltzes from Beethoven to Poulenc (Brioso 142) and an album of Griffes (Musical Heritage Society). Familiar Melodies, Smith's latest work, has received acclaim from such publications as International Piano Quarterly, Fanfare and American Record Guide.

In addition, Smith is an accomplished writer with a column in Piano Today magazine titled "Rare Finds," and articles featured in Piano Magazine. He is the editor of such diverse anthologies as Four Early 20th Century Piano Suites by Black Composers (G. Schirmer), Country Gardens and Other Piano Works by Percy Grainger, American Piano Classics, Great Waltzes, and Tangos, Milongas, and Other Latin-American Dances for Solo Piano (Dover Publications). Smith also has an entry in David Dubal's Art of the Piano and his articles are cited in Maurice Hinson's Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire.

The Edvard Grieg Society was founded in 1991 to celebrate Edvard Grieg's musical accomplishments, life and work and to bring to wider public attention some of his lesser-known gems. It also seeks to build stronger ties between artistic communities in the United States and Scandinavia.
