Noted violinist Togrul Ganiyev will perform in this distinctive concert event.
Gara Garayev (1918-1982) became a leading figure in Azerbaijan culture in the 1940's when he composed the tone poems Leyli and Majnun and the hit opera V'dtan (a collaboration with J. Hajiev).

A brilliant teacher, Garayev defined the evolution of Azerbaijan music after World War II. Trained in the Azerbaijan State Conservatory as a classical musician of European tradition, he transcribed ashug (love) songs and mugams (folk vocal and instrumental compositions of deep and rich, complex and emotional meaning). A favorite pupil of Dmitri Shostakovich in Moscow, Garayev combines Azerbaijan and European styles in his music. Upon his return to Baku, he became a professor of the State Conservatory and created the popular ballets Seven Beauties and In the Path of Thunder.

Garayev was one of the first composers in the Soviet Union to adopt the 12-tone method, which was used in the Third Symphony, The Violin Concerto and in the fugue cycle simultaneously with his compositional work. An active part of the musical life of Azerbaijan and the Soviet Union, he was the recipient of the prestigious USSR Lenin Prize.

The concert will take place on the third floor of Yamaha Artist Services, located at 689 Fifth Avenue in New York City. For tickets or additional information, please contact (212) 339-9995 x 0 or email yasi@yamaha.com.
