'Musician And Machine' Present Compelling Performance At Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall
NEW YORK CITY On November 17, 2008, prizewinning New Zealand-born pianist Henry Wong Doe will perform an exciting program that fuses human artistry with MIDI technology. Performing on and interacting with a Yamaha Disklavier Mark IV PRO Piano, Wong Doe will present solo works from the standard repertoire by Ravel, Messiaen and Ligeti.
Presented by Steve Coffey in collaboration with Yamaha Artist Services, Inc., "Musician and Machine" attempts to merge the worlds of human creativity and computer technology. The first half presents works for solo piano either inspired directly by mechanical instruments, or have rhythm and perpetual motion as a defining stylistic element. In the second half, separated by a short interlude by the New Zealand composer Gareth Farr, are two interactive works for pianist and computer-controlled piano. The first is a pioneering work by the French composer Jean-Claude Risset, and the second is a premiere of a new work by the New York-based composer Brendan Adamson.
Tel Aviv's Ha'aretz describes Henry Wong Doe's playing as "Pianism in a whole different league, namely: art". Having won "Audience Favorite" prizes at both the Rubinstein and Busoni International Piano Competitions, Mr. Wong Doe has enthralled audiences at such venues as Lincoln Center in New York, the Sydney Opera House in Australia and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv, Israel, with his uniquely captivating style.
