Le Poisson Rouge Redefines the Modern Classical Music Venue

NEW YORK CITY — Since its 2008 opening, New York's Le Poisson Rouge has been redefining the concept of the modern performance space. The popular multimedia art cabaret is the realization of a lifetime dream of two musicians, David Handler, a classically-trained composer and accomplished violinist/violist and Justin Kantor, an accomplished cellist and teacher. Today, LPR, as it is now widely called, is a favorite destination for those seeking a modern music venue showcasing a fusion of popular and high-art cultures in music, film, theater, dance and fine art.

Given that LPR attracts an impressive roster of top-notch performers and emerging talent, the venue needed an exceptional piano that would satisfy the exacting requirements of its artists. Yamaha Artist Services, Inc. fulfilled this need with a Yamaha S6 grand piano, the instrument of choice at legendary venues throughout New York, including The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel, The Rubin Museum of Art and Christ & St. Stephen's Church at Lincoln Center, to name a few.

"I am continually impressed with the feedback we get from artists on the responsiveness of the Yamaha instrument," noted Handler. "Its sound envelopes the rather large, atypical concert space, with a brilliant high end and rich lower tessitura."

Noted artists who have been praising the piano at LPR include pianists Simone Dinnerstein and Brad Meldhau, Erika Nickrenz of The Eroica Trio and composers Max Richter and Terry Reilly. "The Yamaha S6 delivers in a way that continues to surprise our listeners and artists alike," adds Handler.

The 700-person capacity venue is the former site of the legendary New York Jazz staple, The Village Gate, which served as an intersection of jazz, soul, blues, rock, salsa, classical and folk music for over 30 years. According to Handler, LPR "strives to form a symbiotic relationship between art and revelry."
