Yamaha Unites With Four New Marching Percussion Artists
BUENA PARK, Calif.Yamaha Corporation of America, Band & Orchestral Division, recently announced the signing of Mike Jackson, Ian Grom, Ray Ulibarri and Rob Sanderl, four of the leading experts in marching percussion, to its ever-expanding artist roster.
"These important artists are educators that represent the ideal creativity and passion that we want collaborating with Yamaha," said John Wittmann, Yamaha's Band & Orchestral Education Manager. "We are thrilled to call them Yamaha Performing Artists."
For nearly two decades, Mike Jackson has been writing, teaching and designing shows for some of the most recognized percussion programs on the West Coast. Currently, he serves as the Percussion Caption Head for the legendary Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps.
"There's a certain comfort I have when using Yamaha percussion instruments," noted Jackson. "For quality and reliability, both in sound and construction, there's nothing else I'd rather be using."
Jackson began his drum corps career with the 1988 Velvet Knights, later marching with Suncoast Sound and the Blue Knights. He is a co-founder and current board member for the Southern California Percussion Alliance (SCPA) and sits on the Board of Directors for Winter Guard International (WGI).
Ian Grom is a performer, composer and educator based out of Southern California. He currently designs and composes for the indoor percussion programs at the Los Alamitos high school and for Pulse Percussion. His recent performance highlights include numerous prime-time live appearances on the hit CBS show Survivor, opening for Aerosmith with Canadian artist Christa Borden and playing on the soundtrack to the box office smash "The Grudge."

Along with fellow designer and instructor John Mapes, he co-founded box-six.com, which is the exclusive seller of their original indoor shows. Grom is a WGI Percussion Advisory Board member and is a volunteer for the Southern California Percussion Alliance circuit.
A native of upstate New York, Robert Sanderl is an active performer, teacher, composer and clinician. Sanderl has performed with numerous groups and organizations that reflect his diverse musical interests. He has performed with The Woodstock Chamber Orchestra, The Orchestra of Northern New York, Alarm Will Sound, The Society for New Music, The Madison Scouts and the contemporary big band Jazz Contingent.
Of Yamaha, Sanderl says, "The Yamaha sound is one that I have admired for years and have come to rely upon when looking to perform my best."
As a teacher, he has taught groups all over the US including The Madison Scouts, The USC Trojan Marching Band, The Arlington Admiral Marching Band, as well as numerous high school percussion groups. As a composer and arranger, Sanderl has provided music for various marching groups and indoor percussion ensembles. He currently has two compositions releasing this year with HoneyRock Music and has been published in Percussive Notes. He has been a guest conductor and clinician at New York State Days of Percussion, NYSSMA, and also at numerous colleges and schools.
Ray Ulibarri is currently the Percussion Arranger for The Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps and former Percussion Caption Head of The Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps. He is beginning his fifteenth year as a percussion instructor in public schools. As an arranger, Mr. Ulibarri has collaborated with Richard Saucedo on numerous marching band shows and published "Reflections of Sound" with Hal Leonard. In addition, Ray has arranged music to be played in a number of Tournament of Roses Parades. His custom percussion arrangements are in demand throughout the country and he is working on publishing works with Tapspace Publications. Ulibarri is an active music adjudicator and clinician throughout the country.
