Yamaha's Sounds of Summer Program Turns 25
Los Alamitos High School will be the site of one very special camp this year, offering instruction not just to students, but also to local teachers as part of their continuing education. Prominent performer, teacher, composer, and author Jim Campbell will be giving the daylong session for educators on July 24th at Yamaha's corporate headquarters in Buena Park, California. Currently Professor of Music and Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Jim also holds the positions of Principal Percussionist with the Lexington Philharmonic, drummer with the Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra, and Past-President of the Percussive Arts Society.
The students attending this camp will be taught by Houston-based percussion educator, arranger, and performer Lamar Burkhalter. Lamar currently serves as the Music Director for the NFL's Houston Texans and Director of events for the NCAA's EV1.net Houston Bowl. Previous experience includes work with the award-winning Westfield HS Band, as well as with the Troopers, Sky Ryders and Blue Knights Drum and Bugle Corps. In addition, he has served as artist/clinician for the Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.
Clinicians appearing at other camps this summer include Tom Aungst, Mike McIntosh, Rob Parks, Rob Sanderl, Kirk Gay, and Colin McNutt. These clinicians are also writing new exercises and etudes for the Marching Essentials Book created by Yamaha and given to each student.
"The origins of this program stemmed from the need to show students and educators the quality of Yamaha drums after the initial launch of Yamaha percussion products in the US, but now it has grown far beyond that scope to become one of the nation's leading instructional opportunities for young percussionists as well," says Troy Wollwage, Percussion Marketing Manager, Yamaha Band and Orchestral Division. "Music students get a wonderful opportunity for up close and personal instruction by some of the finest percussion educators out there today. This unique program is a 'must do' for those aspiring percussionists out there."
Sounds of Summer was one of the first programs created by Yamaha after the creation of its Marching and Concert Percussion Division 25 years ago. The Sounds of Summer program represents a longtime commitment by Yamaha to not only providing musicians with world-class instruments, but also instruction and support for music education. In the last 24 years, it is estimated that over 45,000 students have participated in a Yamaha Sounds of Summer camp.
