Introducing a new paradigm for compact professional mixing consoles – the MGP Series

Anaheim California — Yamaha introduces ground-breaking new mixing consoles that represent a new paradigm for compact professional mixing consoles: the MGP Series.

Yamaha has provided an impressive range of lineups in professional audio since the release of the PM200 in 1972—our first ever professional analog mixing console. In 1987, we also released our first digital mixer, the DMP7, and have subsequently advanced technological innovations in sound quality, reliability and advanced functionalities with cutting-edge digital technologies.

With both the 40th and 25th anniversaries of these landmark achievements landing on this significant year, it is no coincidence that we released a product that drew from our rich past in developing analog and digital products and fused both technologies together making a premium professional series of mixers that redefines the concept of compact mixing consoles. The series comprises two models with two different channel configurations – MGP12X and MGP16X. The series features newly-refined discrete Class-A microphone preamps that use an inverted Darlington circuit design delivering a fat, rich, smooth tone that gives the MGP Series a significant advantage over any other mixer in its class. For superior sound-shaping capability, Yamaha's proprietary X-pressive EQ manages to capture ultimate analog authenticity by reproducing the unique frequency characteristics of sought-after classic EQ modules. At the heart of the MGP's compact configuration, we've taken an innovative new approach to the utilization of digital technology in an analog mixer—adding high-resolution effects, iPod/iPhone integration and the superb functionality of our new Stereo Hybrid Channel to the warmth and musicality of premium analog sound. The MGP Series is in a class all its own with this ideal convergence of technologies offering new level's of sonic quality, functionality and reliability.

Main Features

Studio-grade discrete Class A "D-PRE" mic preamps with an inverted Darlington circuit

The MGP Series features newly refined D-PRE mic preamps which were Initially intended for use with Yamaha's high-end recording gear. These studio-grade discrete Class-A mic preamps employ an inverted Darlington circuit design that features multiple circuitry elements in a multi-layered configuration in order to deliver more power with lower impedance. All the character, depth and feel of the original signal will be delivered with fat, natural sounding bass and smooth, soaring highs. With 48V phantom power, stunning high-resolution sound, and an impressive dynamic range, D-PRE mic preamps meet even the highest demands of professional use.

Musical "X-pressive EQ" based on Yamaha's famed VCM technology

In developing compressors and EQ for high-end digital mixing consoles based on Yamaha's acclaimed VCM (Virtual Circuit Modeling) technology that faithfully model the analog circuitry of classic effect units right down to the very last resistor and capacitor—our engineers became aware of a frequency response characteristics unique to classic analog gear, that proved crucial in reproducing the richness and warmth of sought-after vintage EQ's. Utilizing the unique properties of this distinctive pattern delivers very precise response and steep shelving of the high and low frequencies, making the X-Pressive EQ more than just a means of tweaking your mix, but a a powerful sound-shaping tool that essentially redefines the role that EQ plays in sound reinforcement.

The Stereo Hybrid Channel combines flexible digital functionality and intuitive analog feel

Based on 40 years of experience developing professional mixers, the Stereo Hybrid Channel represents a new approach to the utilization of digital technology in a compact professional mixer by combining simple, intuitive, analog-style control with sophisticated digital functions. The MGP Series utilizes a powerful, proprietary DSP to provide three essential features that are staples of both installed and live sound applications—"Ducker", "Leveler" and "Stereo Image". Each of these functions is readily accessible and available at the touch of a button, providing simple yet flexible control of these valuable functions that would otherwise require additional outboard gear. Featuring a mid-sweep, three-band EQ for nuanced sound control and high-performance onboard A/D and D/A converters, the Stereo Hybrid Channel offers unique functionality with superior sound.

High-grade dual digital effects processors: advanced REV-X and classic SPX

MGP Series mixing consoles offer two separate studio-grade effects processors for ultimate enhancement of your sound, with simple intuitive control. Yamaha's high-end REV-X reverb offers three very musical and natural high-resolution reverb effects: Hall, Room and Plate—a first for any Yamaha analog mixer. For more sound-shaping possibilities, Yamaha's renowned SPX digital multi-effect processor provides a useful selection of 16 advanced digital effects with editable parameters.

Digital connectivity for iPod/iPhone and MGP editor for detailed control of the console's DSP settings via iPod/iPhone

USB connectivity provides smart integration with your iPod/iPhone, delivering high-quality digital playback while charging your iPod/iPhone. By downloading MGP Editor app from the App Store, your iPod/iPhone functions as a flexible controller, giving you more detailed control of the console's effects parameters, Hybrid Channel settings and iPod playback level.

Reliability and functionality to meet the highest professional standards

In order to meet the demands for higher reliability and more premium quality, we reviewed all the elements of the MGP Series' development and design from the ground up. Featuring newly upgraded 1-knob compressors on each channel that feature LED indicators allowing you to visually monitor when the compression "kicks in", a rugged impact-resistant metal chassis with an optimized internal construction for minimal noise, durable and sleek integrated rack ears allowing for rack-mounting in mobile PA and fixed installation, and a multi-voltage, internal power supply that allows for world-wide use in any regions with 100V-240V, the MGP Series establishes itself as a truly "premium" series of consoles for professional use.

"This all-new MGP Series was designed as the "premium lineup" addition to our current MG Series that has garnered worldwide support", said Kazunori Kobayashi, General Manager of Yamaha Pro Audio Division. "In addition to complete redesign of the internal analog circuitries and components, we wanted the MGP Series to offer most beneficial and flexible digital features in order to give them a significant advantage in wide variety of environments, particularly in event and installation applications. We are delighted to support wider range of customers with this new paradigm of the compact mixing console."

The new MGP Series will begin shipping this spring.
