Christian University Chooses CL Consoles
Marion, Indiana (March 03, 2016) — Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), located in Marion, Indiana, is the evangelical Christian comprehensive university arm of The Wesleyan Church. The University, founded in 1920, recently completed an audio renovation in its 1150-seat Phillippe Auditorium (PPAC). PPAC is home to IWU’s Division of Music and Theatre Department, hosting concerts, recitals, theatre, lectures, youth conferences, and more.
"After the evaluation process, we ended up purchasing a Yamaha CL5 that was used for our demo purpose from CSD, states Phil Huber, Technical Director, Sound, Lighting and Media Group. We were so impressed with the feature set we immediately replaced our aging Yamaha M2500 that had been in service since about 2002. We had such a positive response from our student operators, that after a couple months, the school decided to purchase a CL3 to compliment the CL5 from Full Compass for use as a monitor desk or utility mixer."
The new audio system was built around Audinate’s Dante network, Huber says. The backbone of the system uses several Cisco SG300 series switches to manage over 20 points throughout the room to connect the Yamaha consoles to Shure ULXD wireless microphone receivers, recording and playback computers, and even connecting to the university’s mobile TV production truck outside the building.
When initially looking at consoles, Huber said they had a few requirements: flexibility to quickly and easily move FOH locations and the ability to add input capabilities based on event needs. "Since our operators are students, we needed a solution the students could quickly learn, and feel comfortable with, for use in a variety of events. Having Nuendo Live integrated with the console was a factor that helped push the console into strong consideration, as it is extremely useful for training. The great sounding Premium Effects and expansion to include the Dugan Auto-Mixer, gave us that final nudge to select the CL consoles. And, having the ability to create permission levels helps to keep the students focused on fundamentals, as they are granted additional console access when they are ready. Our students come with varying degrees of skill, from never having operated a digital console to those that come to us very skilled."
One Yamaha Rio3224-D is permanently installed as the interface for the various inputs and outputs available around the stage for the CL5 located at FOH. Having a second Rio3224-D enables a quick expanded I/O count, already proven to be helpful for several shows. Huber said the Yamaha CL3 is setup to be portable, serving a variety of events with varying needs for the flexibility they have with the Rio1608-D and 3224s.
The Phillippe Auditorium upgrades also include Shure ULXD4Q Dante equipped receivers; a MacBookPro to run Nuendo Live, playback and various control software programs (Dante Controller, CL Editor, Wireless Workbench, LA Manager, to name a few); and an iPad Mini to run the StageMix application.
